Carrie Ann Inaba Hosts GSN’s “1 VS 100″

We’ve been teasing the host of 1 VS 100 on Twitter all morning.  We can now reveal that Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba is the host of GSN’s revival of 1 VS 100, the former hit NBC show.  The original host was Bob Saget.  Arsenio Hall was also a candidate to become host, but it went to Carrie Ann.  The show pits one contestant against a mob of 100 for a top prize of $50,000.  The daily series will begin November 15th at 7:00PM ET.

Updated: A press release gave a few minor details out about the game.  They’ll retain two of the helps from the NBC version: Trust the Mob (you lock in with the Mob’s most popular answer) and Poll the Mob (you see how many Mob members answered a certain answer of your choosing).  Poll the Mob was recently added to the Dutch version.  The show won’t have the Mob on set.  Rather, the Mob has pretaped their answers in front of a camera and will appear via video.

Updated: Game play was posted on About.com.  Here’s what it looks like.  We’re going the season two money ladder route that NBC used.  You move up for the more people you eliminate
0-9: $0
10-19: $500
20-29: $750
30-39: $1,000
40-49: $1,500
50-59: $2,500
60-69: $5,000
70-79: $7,500
80-89: $10,000
90-99: $25,000
100: $50,000

So given how NBC’s second season went, expect a ton of $10,000 and $25,000 winners.  I wish they went with the far superior bounty system from the first season, where the amount of money per Mob member went up each question, but this wasn’t unexpected.  This is the format the video game used, and the video game helped solidify this show’s place as popular.  Same walk-away situation as always.  The questions will be the really good twist questions from season one at least.

WOW! From onetime “Fly Girl” to “Quizmistress.” …Betcha you thought this sorta thing only happened in Japan, or the U.K., now, didya? (lyao)

  • sVybDy says:

A top prize of $50,000? So what does the mob get if they win, 20 bucks?

  • insaneben says:

    Interesting choice.
Having only seen snippets of “Dancing With The Stars”, the only other thing I’ve seen her on was the “Tokyology” DVD (which is pretty good if you want to see the lesser-known parts of Tokyo, but kind of a letdown if you’re expecting Anthony Bourdain-esque commentary).

So, we’ve got two female game show hosts (one African-American, one Asian-American). All we need now is a female Latin-American host to complete the trifecta and GSN will receive the NAACP seal of approval (having watched relatively little TV as of late, save for football, no names really cross my mind- any suggestions?).

Back on topic… $50,000 for the top prize? What’s wrong with bumping it up to $100,000? This sounds like another classic instance of GSN playing it safe. (What’s that about the entertainment industry being stuck in an economic spiral? La-la-la-la- I can’t hear you!)

  • MikeSant318 says:

Is there a per-player bounty (as originally devised) or a money ladder (like in disastrous season 2/3)?

  • JB says:

I had SO hoped this would work, but I’m worried for it already, not because of Carrie Ann but because GSN went cheap. Seriously, did nobody pay attention to the new crappy Don’t Forget the Lyrics at GSN? How about we bring back The Mole for ten grand, or Duel for some candy bars or something? Makes about as much sense as $50K and a pre-taped mob.

  • David says:

Kinda surprised a bit, but at least she isn’t Carnie. :-D

Seriously though, every move GSN seems to make is cheap. From what DONDs, er, shows to air to the prizes on the shows, there’s no car there (though they certainly aren’t the only network guilty of not caring about their viewers).

    • Adam says:

I assume you’re refering to NBC? Whose version of 1v100 had excellent ratings, yet Ben Silverman was so greedy. And today, the promos on their O&Os say crap like “Where Can I get a good meatball?” David, I hope you ARE refering to NBC.

      • David says:

Well, you’re right on that point. You can interchange them because both channels stink for the same kinds of reasons.

  • James E.Parten says:

Fifty thousand dollars is no small amount of change, except when compared to the million dollars that folks are coming to expect from game shows these days.

Look what folks go through to win fifty thousand bucks on “Wipeout!”.

Not having the Mob in studio may be more of a problem–but then, this means that you don’t need to build as large a studio.

At least GSN is still running game shows. They are not straying from their message, as a certain other network is doing by running game shows, one of which just premiered last night.

    • Artemis says:

It’s not a matter of going through a lot to win, it’s a matter of the probability of a win occurring. The probability of someone winning $50,000 on Wipeout is 100%. It’s acceptable to offer a lower prize when someone is guaranteed to take it home.

1 vs. 100, on the other hand, has only ever seen one winner. To prove yourself smarter than 100 people is no easy task, and it will very rarely happen. Back in the older GSN days, Russian Roulette would GUARANTEE some kind of win, a very fairly devised bonus round would offer a good chance at winning $10,000, and one final risk at odds no lower that 1 in 6 would offer a $100,000 prize.

The audience can read how difficult a game is, especially with a name like 1 vs. 100. Offering $50,000 just comes across cheap on their part.

  • Gene says:

Wow the pretaped mob is a turn off no mob banter or booing the contestant its so exciting seeing that couldn’t they reduce it to 50 people and use a Hollywood squares set up?

Average People is going to see this show and say wtf?

Carrie Ann is a interesting choice

  • Marc Power says:

definitely didn’t this one coming, Carrie seems kind of a random choice but I didn’t feel comfortable when I heard Arsenio Hall was a front runner. But I’ll wait until I make my judgement but I do agree that $50K is too low, $100K would have been passable, I would have preferred $250K but I knew that was a long shot. and a pre-taped mob wtf? Most of the fun of the show was the mob interactions, but I guess GSN didn’t have a choice. the budget was too small. but in that case I say GSN, if you’re gonna do a half-assed revival don’t bother.

    • Mrs. Lady says:

Completely agreed. The mob interaction is what made the show fun. Looking at a board full of web-cams is boring. And the fact the the answers are pre-taped makes it even more lame. No spontaneity. No excitement. Regardless of the low prize money, the show is now just boring. Needless to say, it is a waste of time to watch it anymore.

I love Carrie Ann, and I was excited about watching it with her hosting. GSN just took all the fun out of it. Sorry Carry Ann, blame GSN for the low ratings.

  • BillCullen1 says:

GSN doesn’t have the money that NBC, ABC or CBS have. Any game show on cable is going to have a smaller budget – that’s just how it is, Don’t know what to say about the host – at least Arsenio is a known name.

  • Tataki says:

Oh GSN, how could you do this to us? *Sigh* At least it’s coming back, with the better questions. ^_^ Any idea what the set looks like?

  • anonymous says:

I was really hoping the top prize would have at lest been $100,000. It’s such a letdown because in the original show on NBC the top prize was $1 million. Now I realize this is cable and we’re coming out of a recession…. but still…GSN’s budget surely would accommodate a larger prize potential.

It doesn’t leave the mob very much money to split.

The network execs need to seriously consider this criticism if they plan on doing more shows beyond the current season.

  • Mr. Brown says:

    Poor Arsenio Hall…

Wasn’t he also supposed to host the syndicated Deal or No Deal?

  • MD says:

Pre-taped Mob? What the hell is that? And Carrie Ann Inaba as hostess? That’s a very random choice to me. I hate to say this early on, but the new 1 vs. 100 will probably be a one-season wonder like The Money List (which also had a top prize of $50,000) and 20Q. The old version had a great format, for the most part, but this revival reeks of cheapness. I honestly cannot see this doing very well, and if it does, I will be very surprised. Sorry to sound so negative, but I call it as I see it.

  • Jordan says:

GSN should have went the season one route of NBC’s 1 vs. 100. That rung latter was great, and the show really got into its groove in December 2007, and it was really enjoyable to watch. Also confused as to why they haven’t chosen to build a significantly smaller set and just use a regular mob for one week (five episodes), then they could use Ask the Mob as well. Anyway, here’s what I feel would work best.

    Question 10 (and on): $1,000
    Question 9: $900
    Question 8: $800
    Question 7: $700
    Question 6: $600
    ———————–
    Question 5: $500
    Question 4: $400
    ———————–
    Question 3: $300
    Question 2: $200
    Question 1: $100

With a top prize of $100,000 with this format, it should work well. We’d see wins around $20,000 and maybe some bigger ones once in a while. Nonetheless, I’m still excited to watch the revival, and I hope it pans out well for GSN.

  • Jeff says:

YUCK!! I can’t wait to see this show crash. I cannot stand Carrie Ann Underwear or whatever her name is. YUCK, YUCK, YUCK!!!!!

  • Jeff says:

Sorry, my mistake, couldn’t remember her last name. The way the announcer announces in on Dancing With Stars, it makes it sound like Carrie Ann Underwear instead of Inaba. My Mistake!! Still don’t like her though.

  • Phillip says:

A lot of game shows are going downhill now. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and Don’t Forget the Lyrics both went through this change. Both of the shows are good. but the are really hard. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? was never true to its name; half of its questions are way harder than my knowledge, and I am in 7th grade. They transitioned from a top prize of $1,000,000 in the FOX version to $250,000 in the syndicated version. At least that’s decent money. I haven’t actually seen the original Don’t Forget the Lyrics, but I have been watching it since it premiered in syndication. The current version seems stupid because all they do is spread out 5 songs over the course of a half-hour, with half of it being mindless suspense and 5-minute commercial breaks. 1 vs. 100 seems to be making the same change as Don’t Forget the Lyrics, but hopefully, the game still remains an hour long.

  • Devon says:

7PM? Why does everything have to air then? That’s AOTS time for me. I hope there’s repeats on the weekends at least.
New host looks interesting. I can’t wait to see how she does,

  • LaJuan says:

I’m glad that Phillip confirmed my beliefs about 5th grader!

I could care less who was the host, but Arsenio got turned down AGAIN! Goodness!
But the broken record will win out in the end. GSN watered down the game and it won’t last. No live mob and low payouts = one and done. I’ll give it a shot…..until I see the Mob.

  • James Greek says:

Arsenio would have been a good host for syndicated DOND and we would have seen a revival of The Joker’s Wild as well as our friend John Ricci’s Combination Lock. Also, Arsenio would have been great for 1 vs. 100 as well. But the more I think about it, I think GSN needs it for the promotion. Hopefully they will keep Carrie Ann on DWTS and the host for TNG (what’s her name? I forgot) Hopefully, they’ll keep her on The View. I think GSN is doing this for the promotion because they badly need it.

Keep in Mind that when in 1989 Tim Brando was considered and was a finalist to host WOF after Pat Sajak left to do his talk show for CBS. At the time, he was on ESPN. I heard on his interview with Steve Beverly two years ago that when he brought forth the idea to ESPN they not only embraced it, but also saw it as a way to promote their network. Because at the time ESPN was not the powerhouse it is now. So I hope they keep Carrie Ann on DWTS and What’s her name on The View so they can promote their network and their shows. I know the latter will have more time to promote TNG on GSN. GSN badly needs it.

  • glenn says:

The money value is ok, the online and non studio players is giving me Paranoia nightmares where the phone and online players confused everything for what WAS a good precursor to 1 vs 100.

And yes Paranoia was a terrible and confusing show…hopefully they wont fall into that trap…but it scares me.

  • Fran says:

Carrie Ann is such a beautifful young lady, she would look so much better if she would wear her clothes a liuttle looser around the hips anf upper thys. and a little longer about inch or so. Just a little motherly advise.

    • Doug says:

we think alike, she is very sexy and has a great figuer. but those dresses do nothing to flatter her figuer. she needs a skirt and top , it will enhance her waist line and still show those great legs. i like the lenght of her dresses, it fits her size. but the current dresses make her rear end look large and it make her look like she has a belly due to the way the dress hugs her figuer..

  • Jackie says:

I agree — her clothing is not ver flattering! She actually looks pregnant somtimes.

  • Jackie says:

oops, I meant not very flattering

  • Queen Bee says:

Tired of seeing Carrie Ann’s rear end in her too short (age inappropriate) and too tight clothing. What are they thinking?
Afraid I will not watch anymore. She is phony. How did she even get that job?

    • CarShark says:

I imagine it had something to do with the way she filled out her “too short”, “too tight” clothing. Age is but a number to some.

    • kymagirl says:

Have to agree. Can’t stand watching the behind shots of her or the side shots. Really not looking for a large rear end or belly paunch in my game show host – sorry, not being catty, because I too have both of these issues. Get the woman some appropriate clothing that doesn’t look like it would be in danger of splitting if she sits down.

  • Joan says:

Bob Saget is 150% better than Carrie Ann. I don’t watch it anymore with her as host.
