BuzzerBlog’s “Deal” World Tour: Australia

In our on-going weekend series, the second stop on what NBC’s Deal or No Deal world tour should have been is the Australian version.  The show began in 2003 as a primetime series with a top prize of $2,000,000.  The next year the show was reformatted to a half hour daily edition for $200,000.  It follows the same format as ours except it’s a lot more brighter, a lot more high energy, and contestants hold the cases as they do basically everywhere else on the planet.  Take a look at some videos from the Australian take on the show.

The Aussie version is my fav. out of all of the ones I’ve seen, the theme msuic, set and the atmosphere give it an almsot TPIR feel and they do ask questions at the beginning so we know the person who plays for the money isn’t a total idiot and the contestants for the most part are much smarter with their strategy. Their double or nothing is better format too (especially when they added a second case that said the other) but i dont think many contestants would risk all that much and how can you play double or nothing if you win the car? I’m a little surprised since the third contestant said she wanted $10K that she didn’t risk $47K and walk away with a very nice $104,000. the main issue I have with the Aussie version is the host is a little too excentric for my tastes.

It’s funny that the reasons you like the show are the reasons I don’t. DoND is not a quizzer. It is a game purely of luck and timing. You want questions, bring back Winning Lines (which I actually wouldn’t mind….even though I never saw any episodes of the CBS run). The music sounded too much like Aussie’s TPIR for my taste. However, I do agree with you on the Aussie 2x or Nothing as being a good one.

This format makes me think that having models is WAY BETTER than other people. The whole guessing what you have in the case takes the focus away from the REAL contestant. Plus, the models feel just as bad (if not worse) than regular people when the contestant is bit with bad luck. If they are not using models for the daytime series, I hope they’re using the UK format.
