THIS JUST IN: DREW CAREY IS REPLACING BOB BARKER AS HOST AS THE PRICE IS RIGHT. FULL STORY IN SHORTLY.
Breaking News: During a taping of Late Night with David Letterman, just minutes ago Drew Carey confirmed he is the new host of The Price is Right on CBS. He beat a field of dozens of contenders. Up until Drew Carey announced he was in the running, the front runner was Mark Steines with with other contenders such as John O’Hurley, George Hamilton, Mark Walberg, David Price, and Todd Newton. The staff has been said to return to work within the next few weeks. Drew Carey also hosts CBS’s new game show Power of 10. It was stated that Drew Carey was contacted by CBS to replace Bob Barker after the pilot taped. Thank you, CBS. It took you long enough, but you made the correct choice.

On this day July 23, 2007:
Game Show Websites all over the internet have been shaked, as Drew Carey is the new host.

I am glad he is going to be the host, he is funny, and he will be good on Power of 10 (Starting This Wednesday!)

This has potential…would’ve liked to see Newton, but I could see what caused CBS to make this decision.
Yes, I like Todd as a choice, but honestly, he’s still an unknown, so to speak. And it’s not like Steines is a household name either, compared to say, John Tesh, or even Bob Goen, in terms of Entertainment Tonight hosts.
Drew, on the other hand, starred in a successful sitcom that still airs in syndication, and I know a lot of people who fondly loved Whose Line…even if it was for Wayne or Colin. Bottom line: Drew has name recognition and is good on his toes. And he proved in his interview that he GETS IT. I don’t see him making a bunch of ridiculous changes like what Rosie O’Donnell had in mind.
Memo to CBS: As you know, Todd Newton is one of the best kept secrets in TV right now (game show or otherwise). If you ever consider adding more daytime games (longshot) or through your syndication units (CBS Paramount or King World), please look at Todd for hosting considerations. Or better yet, something in primetime.

My biggest fear is that he will make TPiR more about him, and less about the contestant, sad…sad indeed.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This can’t be happening. Has CBS confirmed it yet? They’re the only ones who can. I’m still hoping deep within my heart that it’s not true, and that somehow, Todd Newton will end up hosting it.

WOW! I’m looking forward to the new season of game shows more than ever NOW!
Yes, CBS made a good choice. He’s a name with great recognition, he’s funny, personable, and just an all around great T.V. entertainer! This is gonna ROCK!

To everyone who’s caterwauling about the fact that Tood Newton didn’t get the gig:
Get over yourselves.
Yes, Newton is a good host, possibly the most promising of the most recent crop of emcees that have emerged over the past 10 years. But the world is not going to end because Todd Newton was not chosen to host TPIR. And let’s be honest: there were far worse candidates in the running (Mario Lopez, anyone? George Hamilton? Rosie?) - let’s be thankful that they didn’t pick someone who was going to turn the show into a caricature of itself.
So let’s give Carey a fair shake here. TPIR is CBS’ daytime darling; I’m sure they knew the stakes of this decision and took them into account when selecting him. I look forward to see him step onto Stage 33 as The Price is Right enters a new era.

At least Drew Carey does not have the ‘game show’ look to him.
Drew, I think, has serious potential to do well. He is spontaneous, is smart, and brings an aura of confidence but he’s not smarmy.
This is much better than Ian Ziering or Todd Newton. Not a bad choice at all.

So a few qualified candidates have been passed over for a big-name celebrity, why am I not surprised? I’m not sure Drew is going to work out in regards to interaction with the contestants, knowledge of the games and chemistry with the announcer, but I might give him a chance

As much as I would have love to see Todd Newton take over as host, Drew Carey is a very good choice, his hosting stint on Whose Line was very good.
If you remember in some of those games, he would get the audience involved and make them feel comfortable (Even if Wayne Brady was singing to them).
I would like to see how he does on the Power of 10 and if he does well on Power of 10, then CBS is going to look SMART!

The new question is what is going to be the new name of some of the pricing games?
Barker’s Bargain Bar = Drew’s Discount Disco.
Barker’s Markers = Carey’s Checkmarks

Wow. I am kinda disappointed. I know a lot of people like Drew, but I have NEVER been one of them. Yes, I think he’ll make a better host than Rosie, but I am still worried.
Pros: He’s not Bob Barker. CBS could have tried to ‘replace’ Bob, but they didn’t. They went in a total opposite direction… which is good!
Cons: He’s Drew Carey. I find him more of a comedian than a game show host. I am just worried that he’ll try to be too much of a comedian and try to make it too funny. (I could be wrong.)
Sorry, I’m still shaking my head. As much as I like game shows and TPiR, it might just have been better to retire the show with Bob… although CBS never would’ve let that happen!
Just my 2cents.

I guess in recent days we really should’ve seen it coming. I still say Todd was the most qualified, but I like Drew (Steve Beverly says some insiders call him “The Overweight Bill Cullen”) and I think he’ll do well.
I should urge you not to judge him on just the first show however. Let him run a little and settle in first.

You know what….I’m not upset with this decision.
I mean as much as would’ve loved to see Todd Newton get the spot. I can’t disagree with CBS. I mean he did a great job with “Whose Line is it Anyway?” and in someways it was a “gameshow” I think we shouldn’t pass judgment until we see him in “Power of 10″ (At least I won’t)
So Congratulations to Drew Carey on getting the mike to the world’s greatest gameshow.

[comicbookguy]Worst Decision Ever![/comicbookguy]
This reminds me of the film “Man of the Year”.
The fate of the Price is Right is in the hands of a Comedian.
I don’t know if all the readers know this, but Drew has attempted Suicide at least twice. No cause or reason why he would do such a thing.
I’d rather have Newton host. After all, Barker called him [Newton] a “Living textbook”.
Scott
30July 23rd, 2007 at 8:47 pm
Not the end of the world, folks, actually a reasonable choice. I have always thought Drew a decent option, though I believe Newton deserved it more. For those who are so eager to compare him to prior hosts (of TPIR and others):
1. Bob Barker had experience doing Truth or Consequences, a game/variety show which involved audience members. Drew Carey did Whose Line Is It Anyway, which was a game/variety show which involved audience members…and a solid hit.
2. Drew doesn’t take himself too seriously; neither did the Dean, Bill Cullen, Chuck Woolery, or Tom Kennedy. (As for Bob Barker, quite the opposite. A welcome change, I’d say.)
3. Drew has trademark large-frame glasses. So did Bill Cullen.
4. Drew came up in a working-class city…Cleveland. Bill Cullen came up in another, Pittsburgh.
5. Drew’s background included standup comedy; so did Peter Marshall’s, Howie Mandel’s, Bob Saget’s, and the late Ray Combs’. Peter Marshall had no hosting experience prior to Hollywood Squares, nor did Mandel, Saget, or Combs. Drew has at least some experience.
6. Bill Cullen was genuinely likeable and funny. So is Drew Carey (to many people, at least)
I could go on, but there is no reason to believe Drew Carey is a bad choice. I think he will be a refreshing change and it will be less easy to compare him to Barker…their styles are totally different. He will maintain the college demos, and may even keep the stay-at-homes around. And if successful, just wait for the Million Dollar Spectacular to come back to Prime Time.
Lastly, remember how people said Alex Trebek could not fill Art Fleming’s shoes?

I do believe Drew also suffered/suffers from depression. There’s another reason.
There’s another game show host who suffered from depression yet was quite popular. Sadly, his attempt at suicide succeeded and the world lost a truly funny man long before his time.

At least the state of Ohio will be well-represented on TPIR this coming season, especially the Cleveland area since Drew and Rich were born there (the former in Cleveland, the latter in nearby Bay Village). And Kathy Greco (”Fingers”) is from Ohio as well. I guess it won’t be a total loss : )

So from some of the disgusting comments I have read in reply to this breaking news, I have only reason to believe that “loyal friends and true” only means that you watched TPIR for Bob Barker, nothing more and nothing less.
Why haven’t many of you in opposition to this decision given Drew Carey an ounce of a chance to prove himself? Even many of the other candidates for host in the months leading up to this decision?
I watch TPIR because it’s TPIR. There’s a lot more than just a host that’ll make me stop watching this show now. And if you will now refuse this legacy of a show because a new host had to come into play sooner or later (or now), then I’m sorry you have to live on such a terrible planet.

Drew carey is a great host (even if he’s from cleveland :-P)
I still don’t understand why people want to replace barker with a barker-like drone. Having someone like Carey host the World’s greatest game show is a great change. Carey’s funny, smart, and I really think he’ll be better than Newton. Newton would get too excited over a showcase win with a difference of $18,000.
Trust me, CBS saw something during the tapings of the Power of 10 with Carey hosting if they think that he’d be the best choice for the job.
Give him a chance because, even though i can’t say he’s the perfect man to host TPiR because, duh, that was Bob Barker. But for someone to fill his shoes, Drew Carey definately can bring a new personal element to the price is right. Watch Power of 10 very closely to see how he interacts with contestants.

45July 23rd, 2007 at 11:16 pm
As someone who also suffers from depression and has attempted suicide I find it offensive as well. But getting back to the subject, I was surprised but I’m not going to judge how well Drew does until I see the Power Of 10. If he does well then CBS did the right thing. So I’m keeping an open mind and I hope Drew does a good job at hosting the Power of 10 and TPIR this fall.

46July 23rd, 2007 at 11:20 pm
I echo the sensible majority of people here who say Drew is a good choice for TPIR. I think CBS made the best possible decision they could have. Either way, they would’ve gotten flack from SOMEBODY out in la la land no matter who they chose as TPIR’s next host. This decision may end up drawing the least controversy out of the range of possibilities.
Drew hasn’t done much to alienate himself to the general public, if anything really at all (unlike certain other overweight hotheads). He appeals to most people, he’s a household name, that is nowhere close to an object of “perfection” that seems to dominate the Hollywood domain these days, and he’s generally well liked. I had to go online before I met the first people that actually openly said they dislike him.
To me, Drew is a stand-up guy, with a good head on his *ahem* broad shoulders (I’M JOKING ALREADY!), he’s funny *VERY FUNNY*, and from the shows I’ve seen with him, he can relate to everyday people, all which are qualities EVERY GS host should have.
This decision makes me very happy, my only complaint being CBS’s methodology of choosing the host, after years of prep time they wasted otherwise, but tis be old news. I wish Drew the best of luck, and he can rest assured I’ll be watching… ;)

I HOPE Steve Beverly is weeping tonight.
I always thought Todd Newton was too stiff on Whammy! and the [worthless] prize segments on “Gameshow Marathon”
Rosie was a red herring from the start. Mark Steins was just someone from inside the CBS Corporate empire. George Hamilton was the joke entry.
I think Drew Carey will be fine. He’s taking on a huge amount of reponsibility. People will expect him to live up to Bob’s history. But this is no different then Bob’s first show, except Drew gets a full hour up front, six games, nine contestants, 70+ games to memorize…the guy’s got some studying to do.
I’ll be DVR’ing the first week of shows. Not unlike those lucky few back in 1972 who did the same.
myke25
48July 23rd, 2007 at 11:29 pm
So I’m guessing Fremantle couldn’t get CBS to budge on Mark Steines…CBS couldn’t get Fremantle to drop Todd Newton…so Drew Carey…come on down! That said, Drew is a good choice. I was a Todd guy and I hope he gets another shot at a high profile gig…Sajak won’t be on Wheel forever! But I think Drew will definitely appeal to the college kids, and the older viewers will be ok once they get past the whole “it won’t be the same without Bob” thing. It might even get better with some new blood. And i look forward to Drew’s interaction with the models…both on-and-off camera! Let’s cut Drew a lot of slack here as he gets through the first few tapings. TPIR deserves that.

Well, i was a rehearsal contestant tonight for Power of 10, and right during the rehearsal, Bob Barker calls Drew on his phone, and right where I was standing, Drew was talking to Mr. Barker! He even asked him if he can still use Barker’s trademark line at the end of each show. Drew was very happy, and even the governor of Ohio called Drew to say congratulations.

Measles (#50), I heard that taping of the new season begins August 25. As a TPIR fan for 26 years, I wish Drew the very best of luck, I was a fan of his work - especially “Whose Line is it Anyway” - and I hope he does well. The Cleveland Connection between him and Rich will be amazing to see!

Okay I admit it! When Drew was in the running to be the host of the show I thought he’d be the least likely candidate. I gave him a snoeball’s chance in hell. I have to say that CBS made a wise decision about choosing Carey as host, and here are a few reasons why:
1. Drew Carey is 49. Bob started hosting TPIR when he was 48, so they’re about even starting age-wise.
2. Drew Carey will host TPIR while hosting Power of 10 (pending if the show lasts until the season premiere, which it probably will be based on the commercials). Bob hosted TPIR while he was still hosting ToC, so another even match.
3. I agree that Carey resembles Bill Cullen in some ways.
I will say though that Drew will bring a new dimension to the show. He’s energetic, and he has potential. I’m not doubting his abilities at all. The proof will be in the pudding this fall when he makes his first entrance through Door 2.

It’s pretty funny that a guy who is primarily known for his stand-up and acting career and whose only real game show was that “Play for a Billion” one-time special is about to become the first person in years to host 2 different game shows at the same time!
Joe Capitano
57July 24th, 2007 at 4:26 am
That overlap may or may not happen. Right now, “Power of 10″ is slated for only an eight-week run ending September 19.
As to the apparent start of tapings for Price Season 36, August 25 is a Saturday. The normal Price taping schedule is Monday through Thursday. I’m not saying that date isn’t correct, but since CBS.com hasn’t updated the ticket info page for Price that date may or may not be firm as yet. Give it a day or two.
Meanwhile, anyone wish to take a crack at rewriting “Moon Over Parma”?
Perhaps, “Price Over Parma”?

Just like a lot of people, I wanted to see Todd get the job, but I am intrigued and somewhat excited at the prospect of Drew Carey. I have always been a fam of his, even before his sitcom - when he was a touring stand-up. I have attended taping of both his sitcom and “Whose Line,” and have found him to be an extremely nice, funny and yet, humble man. I think he will work on “Price,”…
…if he doesn’t let the comedy overshadow the game and make it about him. This is what I like to call, “The Da Whoopi Code.”
Good Luck Drew, and good luck TPIR!

Congrats, Drew, if you happen upon this page.
To be honest, I was surprised to see he had even been thrown into the running, but it was a pleasant surprise. I knew that Drew could make TPIR work, given the fact that TPIR can sometimes feel like Whose Line? when contestants get a little unruly. Granted, I was kinda rooting for Todd Newton, but hey, Drew Carey is a GREAT choice.
Break a leg, Drew, for season 36!

I like Drew, but I’m disappointed that he got in and not Todd. And before you tell me to “get over it” and all that bull, consider this: while some of the other host have had test runs, Drew hasn’t. And the stuff surrounding this selection are kinda suspect, if you know what I mean.
Example One (As Observed by CBSPromoMan on G-R.net):
WTF? If you have to actually tell someone that this show’s still going strong, how can you expect him to be enthusiastic about hosting the show? Sorry, I’m not convinced.
Drew is a smart, funny, and nice guy, I’m sure of that. But can he work with the common public? That remains to be seen. I will watch, though, and hope that he can at least be mediocre.
John
61July 24th, 2007 at 4:35 pm
Drew will let the show be about TPIR and the contestants, just like Bob did. I think this is a good decision even if what we have heard and read is about a compromise between CBS and Fremantle. Drew has mass appeal. College kids will love him and seniors will love him. I too will be taping the first few weeks just to see how those first few weeks unfold. Does anyone know how much Drew knows about the games?
I too am a huge Todd Newton fan. I saw him at TPIR LIVE and extended my best wishes to him in hopes he would take over for Bob. However, I believe Todd is such a gentleman and a great guy that he had the class to call Drew and congratulate him. Todd - there are great things ahead for you. Don’t give up the dream and know you have many fans out here.
Drew - We’ll all be watching and pulling for you!! Best of luck!!!

Interesting choice for the new host, it’ll be interesting to see what happens during the new season, plus I know may people have brought this up but there have been many standup comedians who have hosted game shows and done very well.

63July 24th, 2007 at 5:33 pm
If you listen to the interview that he did this morning on The Early Show, his comments could be taken one of two ways: a) He had no interest in hosting TPiR, did not know how big it is, and never watched the show (as interperted by CBSPromoMan), or b) He felt Bob Barker’s shoes would be too big to fill, and was not interested for that reason (which judging by his facial expressions and body expressions would be more likely).

I don’t think Drew was downplaying the show. I think he was scared that this could be the end of his career, just because of the stereotype that game show hosts get. I think the convincing him that this is a big deal just addresses that Price is not your run-of-the-mill game show, and that his exposure would be ten times that from his sitcom, which did very well in the 90s.

I think Drew Carey was a excellent choice for TPIR, I have seen the Drew Carey Show and I have seen him host Whose Line is it Anyway? He is quick on his feet and interacted well with the audience. I think he can do that very well with Price’s audience. Drew can carry the show very well while hosting Power of 10. Drew I think will be a blessing for TPIR and the show will last another 35 years hopefully. Good luck Drew!
