BREAKING NEWS: Bergeron to sub-host Millionaire
Tom Bergeron, host of “America’s Funniest Videos” and co-host of “Dancing With the Stars,” will fill in for Meredith Vieira for a week of shows to be taped after Thanksgiving. No word yet on specific tape dates.

MAYBE, if we are lucky (or at the very least, if I am lucky), Meredith’s leave of absence will be a permanent one, and Tom will get another shot in the game show world, of which he is most deserving…
Gotta agree with Mark on this one. I’d love to see Tom back in the game full-time.
Ouch… no love for Meredith, I see. I would love to see Bergeron work his skill for a week or two, though.
Yeah; I’ve also got to agree with Mark (no relation). I thought Meredith did a nice job on the show, and in the first year or so, it was fun to watch. But now, it’s a humdrum process. The contestant gets on the show, starts making comments about how beautiful Meredith is, she puts on the the biggest fake smile in show business and feigns flattery. Then the contestant makes a pitiful attempt at a joke, the audience starts to laugh, and Meredith awakens from her coma and makes a pathetic attempt at fake laughter, pretending she paid attention to what the contestant said. Then the horn sounds and Meredith once again fakes emotion as she says how disappointing it is that the show’s over, and then she does her cutesy-wootsie double-hand-wave sign-off. It’ll be nice to pump some fresh blood into a show that’s gotten way too predictable.
On another note, I think Meredith should just step down from Millionaire if she wants to be taken seriously as a newswoman, even if she is just a Barbie-doll talking head on a not-at-all-serious morning show. She joins Julie Chen (Big Brother) in the disrespectful, in my opinion, group of people who double as news anchor and game show host. How are we supposed to take anything Julie Chen says seriously (and she has done some serious pieces) when, two days earlier we heard her commenting on the rivalry between the shirtless guy and the big-breasted woman during the whipped cream Slip ‘N Slide competition? There’s enough talent out there to make people serve on just one side of the entertainment/news scale.
Well put my fellow Mark-ite (for lack of a better term), I couldn’t have said it any better myself. ;)
The game has gotten WAY too predictable, it’s anti-climatic way too often (not that that is ALL Meredith’s fault), and Meredith has become nothing more than a pretty face (that is, of course, if you think she is pretty in the first place, LOL)
Wheelloon
MAYBE, if we are lucky (or at the very least, if I am lucky), Meredith’s leave of absence will be a permanent one,
I disagree wholeheartedly with that. I think she’s been a fantastic host (she has an Emmy to show for it, after all); and while it’d be cool to see Tom hosting a conventional game show again, I don’t think Meredith should be replaced permanently.
I have to agree with Shelly. I dont think Meredith show be replaced permanently. I think that Tom Bergeron will do a good job with this though and i enjoyed watching him host Hollywood Squares. I would love to see Tom Bergeron back in a game show full time but not Millionare though. maybe a game like Card Sharks if it were to ever get revived like the old version.
How is it breaking news when it is posted three days after it was announced?
Because we, as apparently every other news source around, somehow overlooked this (I personally refuse to watch FOX News, so I wouldn’t have seen it), and we’re the only one besides that newscast to announce this.
Meredith has been doing a GREAT job hosting the syndicated version. However, it would be great for Tom to get back into game show game shows again. He is in a way with “Dancing”, but that just shows that he can do any hosting gig.
An inspired choice, and it probably means he is contractually prohibited from hosting TPIR. Meredith has been a disappointment overall — she is neither entertaining nor does she bring out the best in the contestants or the game. Do not be surprised if Bergeron is asked to do another syndicated strip down the line, which would keep him busy in between seasons of Dancing.
As for news anchors who served as game show hosts, I dare you to claim that Bud Collyer, perhaps the most well-known to do so, did damage to either genre. Feel free to go to where there is a fitting tribute. Don’t paint with a broad brush here.
The fitting tribute for Bud Collyer is tvgameshows.net.
You just lost a lot of credibility points as an objective news source when you wrote “(I personally refuse to watch FOX News, so I wouldn’t have seen it)”.
This isn’t a place for partisanship. It’s a place for great news coverage.
Mike Wallace, Walter Cronkite, John Daly, Hugh Downs…ALL newsmen who have hosted game shows, most WHILE they were newsmen. I wouldn’t slam Meredith because of a news cred issue. Hell, Tom Bergeron hosted Fox’s early morning show before doing Hollywood Squares. I just think Millionaire has run it’s course. The mechanics of Millionaire have always worked better as a short burst of specials, not as a continuing series. When was the last time Meredith crowned a Millionaire? Most players seem to leave with around $16-25K. That said, I think Tom Bergeron will do a great job subbing. I just wish he was hosting a “Pyramid” revival or something.
“This isn’t a place for partisanship. It’s a place for great news coverage”.
I agree. Your credibility now goes down. There were other sources besides FOX that talked about Tom Bergeron. You just bad mouth FOX any opportunity you get.
This isn’t the first time you made an attack on some form of media and yet, you expect to be taken seriously? Oh, Please.
I disagree. “Not watching FOX News” is like “not watching [random affiliate] because their coverage sucks.” Everyone is entitled to their opinion, whether you like it or not.
Besides, most of the news we get here is from press releases published online or from insider sources.
Oh for the love of christ. I didn’t do this in a post. I did this in a comment. If I did this in a news post, you have full right to flame me and personally find where I live and hit me over the head till I knock it off. It’s a comment. If I said “Republicans blow”, which I don’t fully believe, you can do that. I said I refuse to watch FOX News. Big deal, I refuse to watch CMT also. Get over yourselves. Democrats aren’t perfect, and I fully accept that. I think Lewis Black said it best, that in the 2004 election, we were picking between two piles of shit, and we were just judging by smell.
If I made a post saying “Voting is like a reality show. Vote today, and be sure to vote democrat, because republicans or morons”, which, again, I do not believe whatsoever, you can go get Jerry Falwell to sit on my head. I badmouth FOX because it is, without a doubt, the dumbest network I have seen. Two of it’s most popular shows, Futurama and Family Guy, are coming back because the network is bad with scheduling. It cancels Greed because of the performance of another show. It cancels The Rich List partially because of bad ratings and partially because they don’t want to pay the rest of the contestants.
Yeah, guys. I’ve got to come to Alex’s defense here. While I do doubt the validity of the statement that Fox News was the only source in the world to cover this, I don’t think he loses news credibility by making a jesting statement in a follow-up comment on a blog. Blogs are all about using satire and humor to inject personal opinions and entertainment into news. Alex’s comment about Fox News, and Fox as a whole, fits this mindset perfectly, and is even tailored to this crowd considered the notable reader outrage about Fox’s pulling of The Rich List. While I’ve quibbled about stuff on this site before, I don’t believe this is something that deserves the kind of reaction it received.
I may not tune in to The Rich List next fall or winter because of FOX’s decision to cancel this
U.S. adaptation of a U.K. quiz show following a single episode. Eammon Holmes was the em-
cee of this transatlantic hit format. Mr. Holmes’ original Rich List footage can be posted online
