Bob Barker Might Not Be Done With “Price is Right”

Could this entire retirement charade that has been going on for a few months be fake? As you may have known, Bob Barker taped his final episode of The Price is Right on Wednesday. The host search, well, hasn’t gone exactly well, has it? We know that Mark Steines, Geroge Hamilton, Todd Newton, and John O’Hurley are being looked at currently. However, Barker has been quoted as saying he would fill in for a few more months until they found someone if they needed more time. To use the exact quote:

“They’re having trouble finding someone to do the show,” Barker told reporters during a post-show press conference. “And I’ve told members of the staff here that … if they wanted me to do it for a few more months, I would do it.”

So there you have it. This entire god damn thing may have been a waste of time. Honestly, it’s absolutely pathetic that CBS has not found a host yet. The long-running British show Countdown had two host switches in the time period of around a year and did it seamlessly. CBS and Fremantle can’t pick who they want yet, and it’s not a good sign. It’s very simple if you ask me: If you can’t find the key person to fill the gap, end the show. Of course CBS won’t do it as they feel the show will still improve and be profitable with a new host, and I just don’t think it will. I think it’s time to just close the curtain on the show. It’s very evident that they can’t find a good person as host or else they are all very good and it’s too close to call (which I highly doubt is the case). Why do a disservice to the show and Bob Barker by getting a host who will do it half-assed and cancel the show in a year? That being said, they will get a host who will do the show half-assed and cancel the show in a year. This situation has not been going well and I just have a feeling it won’t end well either.

Rosie O’Donnel still wants to be Bob’s successor, and she wants Ross “The Intern” Matthews to be the announcer instead of Rich Fields. Not gonna happening! If they wanted a woman to host, they should get Annie Wood (host of “Bzzz”). I’m not sure where Annie Wood is now, but she would attract a lot more of a male audience than Rosie. Is Annie Wood related to the late gameshow announcer Gene Wood? If they’re related, Annie would be Gene’s granddaughter

Anyway, the host will be a man, and here are five other possible ‘Price’ contenders that may not have a tryout yet, but they could have been contenders if they were interested:

    Larry Anderson
    Billy Bush
    Graham Elwood
    JD Roberto
    JD Roth
    Lew Schenider

  • Andy says:

I meant to say six, but they can be many others I may not have thought of.

  • Andy says:

It would be amazing if Jim Perry would come out of retirement to become Bob Barker’s successor. What’s Jim Perry doing now? He should at least make a cameo on “Temptation” to congratulate Rossi Morreale his successor, and maybe play a round of questions. Bill Cullen had a cameo on Barker’s version so whoever the successor to Bob Barker might be, Barker might make a cameo to congratulate his successor.

  • Andy says:

What if they want an African American to host? Here’s a short list of possible hosts:

    Wayne Brady
Michael Carrington: 1st host of “Think Fast!”
    Dave Chappelle
    Mark Curry
    Arsenio Hall
Craig Jackson: Host of the short-lived FOX gameshow “30 Seconds To Fame” a revival of “The Gong Show”
Phil Moore: Host of “Nick Arcade”
Robb Edward Morris: 2nd Host of “Make The Grade” after Lew Schneider
Charlie Murphy: Eddie Murphy’s brother or Eddie could be the host or why not both of them?
Darnell Rollins: Worked with Charlie and Dave on “Chappelle Show” saying at the end of each show ” I’m rich beeoch! ” (Beeoch is a ebonic form of the word ‘bitch’ but I may not have spelled it correctly)

Out of this group of African Americans, Wayne Brady would have the best chance at being Bob’s successor.

  • Mike says:

Andy, your lists of possible hosts ranges from somewhat feasible (Wayne Brady) to outright stupid (most everybody else on the list above this post and the list in #91). Are you throwing names out there for the sake of throwing out names? Out of the 17 names you listed, can you give me at least three qualities for each of the 17 names you offered for why they would be at least a competent TPiR host? Surely you could come up with 3 for Jim Perry, but he hasn’t hosted a show in almost two decades and is retired. Let the man enjoy his later years.

  • Alex Davis says:

Part of Andy’s post was deleted. Can we leave off potentially racist remarks by any chance? Not completely saying it was, but there is a pretty big chance it is and could offend someone. I’d rather not have any situations, so kinda knock it off. Also, is there a need to name every single personality imaginable for host? At least 80% of them have not been worth mentioning and it’s just dragging this down. I enjoy commentary, but let’s not get to the point of mindless banter that’s, quite frankly, frightening. I’d rather not turn this place into the GSN boards, and I’d rather not put you on moderated comment level. I’ve had to do it too much recently.

  • l.e. says:

I say Cecil Portesque for the new host. :P

  • mrquiz says:

After seeing these “wish lists” of possible TPIR hosts (some more ludicrous than others), I’m wondering if any of you who are speculating who’ll replace Bob Barker, le’me ask you something…did any of you see the series finale of “The Sopranos?”

  • Houston says:

Please, please, please, don’t let it be Todd Newton. That guy is so fake. I didn’t like him on the revival of CBS’s “Press Your Luck” and think he’s better on entertainment news shows than game shows.

John O’Hurley is not as great a selection as I thought last year. I remember thinking that he’d be the perfect host for “Family Feud” and, while he hasn’t bombed like Anderson and Karn, he hasn’t been as engaging to watch as the original, Richard Dawson. I find O’Hurley a bit too melodramatic, much like Bert Parks was thought to be for “The Hollywood Squares”. O’Hurley’s best hosting gig was “To Tell The Truth”, working with celebrities – that’s his forte. O’Hurley might be a strong contender because (a) he’s got name recognition, and (b) he’s got white hair.

I read another post on this blog that said Conan O’Brian would be a good host. Conan would be a good host, but I wonder if he could tone down his humor a bit. Bob Barker was funny because he was a rascal, but he never said anything oldsters would consider in bad taste. Conan’s humor is more “adult” and I think he’d turn off more those folks looking for more corny humor. Still, he’d be interesting to watch.

Whoever they get, I think the show should visually change somehow – not too much, but just enough to differentiate between the end of one era and the beginning of another. And I don’t think the curtain should be brought down on the show altogether; there’s plenty of talent out there, it’s just that the producers need to pay close attention to what the larger viewing audience wants.

Hey, they could even do it as an “Apprentice”-style reality show: “The HOST Is Right: The Price Is Right Emcee Interviews”!

    Cheers,
    Charles

  • Red says:

RICKI LAKE SHOULD HOST PRICE IS RIGHT WHEN BOB BARKER LEAVES ON JUNE 15TH. SHE WAS SO GOOD WHEN SHE HOSTED GAMESHOW MARATHON THAT I NEARLY WET MY PANTS. ACTUALLY I DID. SHE HAS THE MOST EXPERIENCE. I MEAN SHE’S HOSTED SEVEN DIFFERENT GAME SHOWS. YEAH MARC SUMMERS, TODD NEWTON, JOHN O’HURLEY, ALEX DAVIS, TRY TO TOP THAT HUH. IT ALSO HELPS THAT SHE’S ALMOST AS HOT AS CAROL BRADY WAS IN THE SEASON 2 EPISODE 46 ‘THE WINNER’. THAT ONE WAS A HOOT.

  • mrquiz says:

I saw “Game Show Marathon” last year, and like it or not, Ricki Lake would be to TPIR, what Katie Couric is to “The CBS Evening News.” (at the very least, I could host “Beat the Clock” better than she could!) Some of you game show fans on this blog need a hug, a hobby, and a gallon of your favorite flavor ice cream…none of which you’re getting from me.

  • Andy says:

Sorry if I offendened anyone and made some silly off beat speculations. You guys can remove any of my comments that make no sense or that are insensitive.

  • Andy says:

Update from tvgameshows.net: Mark DeCarlo will not be getting a tryout for being Bob’s successor. He’s a rotating host for the Vegas version of ‘Price’ and Les Moonves will make the call on who will be Bob’s successor.

  • Alex Davis says:

Hence why we did not report on that. It would have been on TVTix by now if he was getting an audition. This is obviously nothing against you, but we like to reference TVGameshows very little around here. There have been more situations such as this.

  • Intelligentfan777 says:

    Um…….

I assume “Red” is on PCP, Crack, or some other kind of illegal drug. That’s the only reason I can come up with for the kind of post that appears just 5 above mine, here.

  • Mike says:

No, Red’s trying to prove a point, one lost on you.

  • David Saurer says:

Here is two options I can come up with: I know you all will ride my hide on this one idea.

First, I think, BOB should continue hosting the Price is Right for one more season. WHY? Here is my idea for a CBS ratings hit bonzana that will sure knock off all the rival networks assumption of fall tv lineups. Why can’t CBS and FREMANTLEMEDIA do a Reality Show Series, A DREAM OF A LIFETIME!!! a TPIR FAN Dream reality possibility. WHY NOT! Have TPIR fans from America’s top 5 Media Markets try out with judges from TPIR staff, Fremantlemedia staff, and CBS staff do a skit of one of the Pricing Games from TPIR. They have one chance to prove to the judges they got what it could take to be the host of TPIR, those that make it in, will be invited to the show’s big stage, BOB BARKER STUDIOS AT CBS TELEVISION CITY. I say take the top 100 audtioners from the five biggest television markets and bring them to Hollywood to try out. From there, will be a voting session for each round just like American Idol (IDOL IS A DAMN RATINGS BONZANA why couldn’t this/) HAVE AMERICA VOTE WHO THEY BELIEVE HAS THE CHARM, THE PASSION, THE DRIVE, THE EXCITEMENT, THE THRILL of replacing BOB BARKER as the HOST of TPIR. The winner would get a two year contract from CBS and FREMANTLEMEDIA to be the host. If they do a great job, they are in for an extension. It wouldn’t hurt to try this idea. LONG SHOT I KNOW!!!

    The Second idea:

I like to see Rich Fields get this job. Doug Davidson is not a bad idea, but I think there is better out there. It is going to be a long process. I am not sold with Todd Newton, nor will I be sold with John O’ Hurley or the joke of em all, George Hamilton.

What do you guys think of the idea of a reality show to settle this?

  • Greg Palmer says:

To Mike: What point is Red trying to make?

To David: Fremantle and CBS are not going to be stupid enough to find a replacement in the general public. They’re not going to have an Idol-type show because that would be like trusting a baby to fix your car. CBS is going to choose someone with experience and personality, someone who knows all 70+ games inside and out. I personally would like Todd, Doug, or Mike to host, but we all know that’s not going to happen.

  • Andy says:

I had thought of an “American Idol” style way at first, but that would make things more complex come to think of it. The old-fashion traditional way for looking at experience is the way to find a host.

Here are some of the pricing games that I think should be retired due to lack of wins and long, confusing gameplay also because it has Barker’s name in the title:

10 Chances; Barker’s Bargin Bar; Barker’s Markers; Bonkers; Buy or Sell; Check Game; Hole in One; Master Key; More or Less; Poker Game (might as well get rid of this one since they retired Hit Me); Race Game; Secret X; Shell Game; That’s Too Much!

  • Mike says:

The point Red made was you sound like a babbling idiot when you throw out names of people who are unqualified to host TPiR.

I could dissect Andy’s latest thing of beauty but my head’s ready to asplode from the lack of common sense festering this place lately. Retire a simple game which isn’t half a season old? Really?

  • Greg Palmer says:

    Who do you mean “you”?

  • David Saurer says:

I figure I would be made a mockery of my idea. LMAO. At least I tried. I know I would like to see them choose the right one. There ideas for a host just plain sucks. I would love to do it, that is a billion to one odd for ever being ask to audition.

    Rich Fields is my vote.

  • Intelligentfan777 says:

I did not lose the point! I just found it strange the way he posted, I GET WHAT HE’S SAYING!

Yes, common sense is starting to stagger a little here. For God’s sake, Bob’s last show is TOMORROW! Let’s get it together, people!

  • Andy says:

They need to retire some of the pricing games such as 10 Chances and Check Game because they take too long to play them, and many contestants don’t know how to play them. Other pricing games that they’re not playing as often such as Joker, Master Key, and Poker Game are on the brink of being retired. Most pricing games will get retired if they malfunction too frequently or if they’re not being won as often.

  • David Saurer says:

We don’t officially know if that is really Bob’s last broadcast taping of TPIR with him as host. Don’t seem to be the case the way it is going, but I have it ready on the DVR. I think Bob is going to nail another Emmy as the Best Game Show Host at the Daytime Emmy Awards.

  • Stephanie says:

David (#112), I am with you on this one. As I’ve said before, Rich was my top choice from the get-go…way back in October. I’m confident that he would do a fantastic job

  • David Saurer says:

Oh, Of course, I knew he would be the best. I like hearing Burton Richardson announcing. My heart is debating on whether to continue the legacy of TPIR or just letting it go and have it being Bob Barker Icon. It is a huge debate. They either hire Rich, or I am not going to watch TPIR only re-runs on the GSN with Bob. Of course, I am very sadden over Bob retiring, but he is up there in age. Tonight is going to be a special night for sure. I didn’t see the 11 am taping of TPIR but will certainly see the one at 8 tonight.

  • Andy says:

Rich Fields will stay as the ‘Price’ announcer and Burton Richardson will stay as the ‘Feud’ announcer.

  • Andy says:

I think Burton Richardson should tryout to be Barker’s successor.

  • Andy says:

Burton Richardson has some knowledge of the pricing games and gameplay, but do we really want another announcer to become an emcee like Bob Hilton? Bob Hilton would not be the best choice if he were to become Barker’s successor. If Frematle wants an announcer to be Barker’s successor, then Burton Richardson has the best chance.
