Tonight GSN debuts their new show Bingo America in just a bit minutes, and this might be interesting. Their site seems to not be working right now, so either there’s major issues on their end or a lot more people are downloading cards than they expected. But hey, you get to play along with the questions at the very least so that’s a plus. It’s a pretty decent show for the first 27 minutes before it drags to a halt in the end game, so just be warned. I’d love to hear your thoughts, as would GSN. Be sure to leave a comment, and also give your star rating (0 to 5) in the POST INFO box when you click on the story’s headline. Hope you like it.
Network: GSN Airings: Weekdays at 7:00PM ET Host(s): Patrick Duffy and Crystal Wallasch Vote for how many stars you think the show deserves to the right, and then leave a comment! Bingo America is the retooled edition of ABC’s failed National Bingo Night. In this version, one of 76 balls (75 numbers plus one wild card) falls from the chute. Home viewers mark the number off and the host then asks a question. A right answer adds the letter to that player’s board and adds the number of the ball into the game’s bank which starts at $500 each episode. The goal is to spell B-I-N-G-O to win the round. Two rounds wins the bank, the game, and the chance to play the Bonus Board, picking numbers randomly, to win up to $100,000. Home viewers who get a bingo win $50.
Bingo America’s a pretty decent little show. The main game runs along pretty quickly and never feels that boring to me. They fixed a major issue the ABC version had: if you don’t like to play bingo, you’re out of luck. With the questions thrown in, you can play two different games at once. The main issue is the end game. It’s so slow it’s annoying and really destroys the entire basis of the bingo show. Going from a bingo and quiz show to a random number matching end game is jarring and could use a fix. Host Patrick Duffy is fine but the game moves along so quickly he doesn’t get a chance to interact with the contestants that much. Co-host Crystal Wallasch is truthfully pointless in her current position. She never says a word except for the number on the ball. If they want a co-host, she should be allowed to act more like one. The set’s a bit barren but nice in the main play areas. The theme music is standard game show fare.

I would never believe that a format as bad as National Bingo Night could get worse, but it did. Bingo America might be the worst game show I have seen in a long time. Patrick Duffy was the only good thing about this show. The fact that he had to comment about the website every 5 seconds is not his fault. “Go to GSN.com/bingo and download your cards and play, America,” before and after every question was a bit much. The music annoyed the hell out of me. Did we really need the annoying music behind every question? The fake audience cuts were even worse. Reminded me of an infomercial. Plus, the bonus round of a glorified Sale of the Century winner’s board was slow and oddly out of place for a question and answer game. The role of the bingo hopper was OK, but the lady picking them out and placing on the podium was pointless.
Frankly, I would rather watch National Bingo night, Temptation, Taboo (with Chris Wyld), and Tic Tac Dough ‘90 while listening to the themes to The Better Sex and All Star Blitz simultaneously than watch this show again.

I agree that the questions add an entertaining play-along factor for non-bingo fanatics. Patrick Duffy was fine…I kind of see him as a potential Bert Convy. To the ladies, he’s a hunk. I hope he gets to showcase a little more of his well-documented silly side. I think the 30 minute format helps the pacing too. Wasn’t NBN an hour?
Give Crystal a chance. Even Vanna didn’t start out as a co-host…she was simply eye-candy for the puzzle board. Also, the fast-paced nature of the game (which I like) doesn’t allow for a lot of host interaction with anybody.
I didn’t have as bif a problem with the bonus round as you did. Could be stronger Bingo-wise, but it was entertaining nonetheless. 4 Stars!

I thought the show was great. I was thinking about going to GSN to get my own bingo cards but I didn’t get a chance too but I would love to in future episodes. Patrick Duffy was an awesome host and the contestants did very well. The end game was quite suspenseful and I was hoping she’d pick a number hiding $100,000 but $5,000 isn’t so bad since that’s basic for a lot of GSN’s programming. I was quite impressed overall.

I don’t have as BIG (not bif)a problem…
Also, I forgot to mention the boost the live studio audience gave it IMHO.

Frankly, the audience took away from the show to me. I like a real audience, but the way they cut to them, and the reactions they got were very infomercial or America’s Funniest Home Videos like. Not the way I would have used them.

I was really impressed with Bingo America. Patrick Duffy makes a awesome game show host. I love the interactive format. I rate Bingo America a 9/9. I have a feeling this show will be around for a while.

Are you people serious?
This show has got to be one of the slowest, worst renditions of an ATTEMPT at a game show that I’ve ever seen!
First of all, what type of scoring is that? YES! I JUST PUT $6 IN THE BANK!
You know that the show is edited down so much to avoid “unnecessary” balls being drawn. I was waiting to see what would happen if they drew a letter they both had - chance to add more money to the pot?
So you’ve got to play 2 games.. what happens if they each win one? Is it a BING-OFF?
Then the DRAMA during the bonus round - they didn’t even hype what type of things COULD be won.
I think the site breaking down on premiere night is a definite sign of karma!

It was a decent show, but nothing really outstanding. It reminded me of the Barry & Enright shows since it had a maingame where you answered easy questions to reach a goal, and a bonus game where you picked numbers (though it didn’t have the “beat the bad guy” element). I do think the interactive element was integrated well and should be a big draw.
One good thing about the show is that it’s well-produced, to the point where it feels more like a syndicated show. I really liked the set and music, and Patrick did a solid job. (I barely even noticed Crystal - she pretty much just played her role and added little else.) And I agree that the presence of an audience enhanced the show greatly; I think the lack of an audience was what did TTQ in. The payouts are quite good too, though I also wonder what the second-highest payout is.
Again, it’s nothing groundbreaking, but it’s a fun enough way to spend a half hour, with an interactive element that will surely draw people in. It’s a good companion show to Lingo and I could see it being the hit that GSN has been waiting for.

Here’s my take. It’s adequate. Not outstanding. Not a disaster. Patrick Duffy does an okay job as host. The bonus round reminds me of the early Whoopi run of Hollywood Squares where, when you won, you just picked a star and got their prize. I think there should be more of a challenge and/or risk, especially with a potential $100,000 on the line. As for the front game, the only other thing I can see doing with bingo is Trump Card (Bob’s Full House for our UK readers). I think the show is fast-paced, perhaps a little too fast. If they are letting viewers know that they can print out up to 10 cards for each game, and there are 3 boards on each “card,” that’s 30 boards you need to check for the numbers that come out. I can scan pretty fast, but I was having some trouble checking the numbers before the next one came out. Therefore, I missed some of the gameplay because I couldn’t focus on the show, just my cards. For that same reason, if I were an advertiser, I would never want my commercials on Bingo America, because no one will be watching them, they’ll be at home checking and double-checking to see if they have a bingo. All in all, I’d watch again, if for nothing else, I have always enjoyed bingo, and like playing along. I don’t think it will be a breakout hit, but it’s in a good spot for GSN. I’ll give it 6/10. It was going to be 5, but the giant bingo hopper will ALWAYS get an extra point!

The show was fair , 3 stars. I don’t know if any readers of this site remember Gambit? It ran from 72 to 76 on CBS. The Gambit endgame & Bingo America’s endgame were somewhat the same, you called out a number & there was a prize or cash. The difference was that on Gambit instead of matching up numbers to win you earned cards & tried to get 21 without going over. If you hit 21 you also won a cash jackpot & a NEW CAR!

Bingo America was a step above National Bingo Night, but still rather mediocre.
The show just felt so heavily scripted and robotic. Duffy reminding viewers to check their cards every five seconds was annoying — is a viewer going to complain to GSN that s/he didn’t win a bingo because Bobby Ewing didn’t tell him/her to mark cards? And the studio audience shots, as a previous posted noted, looked straight out of a Saturday morning infomercial.
Another annoyance: In Game 2, Duffy reminded one contestant three times in a span of one minutes that she needed an “I” to win. Does GSN believe the viewers are that dim when it comes to following gameplay?
The stakes need to be raised somewhat in the main game. $1 x the number on the bingo ball for both rounds is cheap, even by GSN standards! How about multiplied by two in the first game and by three in the second game? Watching contestants get excited that $6 was added to the bank is embarrassing (Yay! I can buy a gallon of gas in California!).
As a previous poster noted, the bonus game is modified Barry-Enright — no skill, just luck. It’s harmless.
Patrick Duffy has the potential to be a good host, but GSN and the producers need to let him adlib and not overscript him. I got a kick when, during the bonus game, Duffy made on off-hand remark about the contestant’s stepson not going to Mazatlan if she won said trip. I’d like to see more of that interaction in future episodes — he can be funny and quite the storyteller when given the chance.

The game isnt bad, its a nice passer of time for a half-hour, and the interactive element is good as well.
Also found a site that has the numbers from each nite’s game up in case you miss it.. I’ve embedded it in my name :)

I agree with Julia, Haterade, and the rest of the people I chatted with yesterday about this pile of garbage. Like How Much Is Enough before it, The Host is the only good thing about this show. Patrick Duffy is fine as host. The game mechanic is flawed because we’d have to draw so many pointless balls if both players in the game need the same letter to win. Plus, the bonus game is a glorified Winner’s Board. It’s just sad that, like HMIE, this show was overhyped and underwhelming.

Wrong… hence the editing, any balls either player doesnt need gets removed if it comes out. :)

This was my first time watching the show; I skipped out last night because I couldn’t get my cards to print, but I’m hooked. The gameplay isn’t very captivating by itself, actually, it would be downright boring by itself. But as a vehicle for driving viewer participation, it’s pretty much perfect. The questions are simple, fun trivia that almost everybody knows, and don’t demand a lot of attention while you’re scanning your bingo cards.
The fact that game cards are only available for a short time before and after the original airing also encourages live viewership, which is a boon for advertisers, although it’s still possible to play with a DVR or without watching the show at all.
I didn’t win tonight, but it was fun playing along, well beyond anything Playmania ever offered. I suppose the odds of winning aren’t very good, but in both games tonight I was only one number away from a win in each game. Perhaps the cards are “rigged” to allow this to happen, which would lessen the “I almost won” euphoria considerably; I’ll have to see how frequently it occurs. Tomorrow I’ll be playing the maximum number of cards instead of just one… actually, come to think of it, I could go back right now and play more cards for tonight’s show still… maybe I’ll give that a try and post back later.

This show is HORRIBLE - it’s like watching paint dry, which I would find more entertaining. GSN seems to be going in the wrong direction in my humble opinion. They cancel good shows like Playmania and Lingo and replace it with garbage like How Much is Enough, GSN Live and now this??

Well since you like Bingo, it doesn’t surprise me in the least you wouldn’t like Playmania. I think it went downhill in the last six months, but when it first launched it was a lot of fun. My two cents.

GSN is moving in the RIGHT Direction! This show is another example. You obviously can’t please everyone, but with originals like this, classics, and Russian Roulette back on (Man, I hope someone revives it!) GSN is definitely trying harder!
Yes, the bonus game needs work, but you have to be happy when a contestant wins a decent amount, because they EARNED the right to be at that board, unlike NBN. Also, you can’t help but sometimes wonder what exactly is on that board. On yesterday’s episode the winning contestants uncovered a square that said………”HOT DOGS.” WHA?! You mean they have boobie prizes up there, too? Hot Dogs?! Is that a $1000 gift certificate to PINK’S, or NATHAN’S, or something? LOL
Anyway, good show. Hope it leads to even better shows.

Well, I always like to give something multiple tries before I form an opinion. This rings true for restaurants, TV shows and back in my bachelor days, women. Today is Friday, I’ve seen five shows. And this show is dullsville. I played at home tonight, which at least gave me a way to entertain myself while the show was on, but tonight’s show is the last episode of this I’m watching. It’s dull, dull, dull. And Patrick Duffy is not meant to be a game show host. This just doesn’t work. The show feels too overproduced (voice-over at the end is blatant, crowd noise ranges from “Full Auditorium” to “Actual Population in the Room of About 15 People”), the endgame (as mentioned in the article) is anticlimactic, and did I mention IT’S DULL AS B*LLS?? If the first night was any indication, the show’s got people watching, so good for GSN, they deserve a hit original show. But I’ll be going back to “Jeopardy!” at 7PM on my tube.

I thought the show was alright but like it’s been said, the game could be a disaster if contestants end up with the same letter left and it takes a while for it to come out, even if they edit it out, that screws over the home viewers. what i would do is if you already have that letter you can change it to a different letter and add that to your score unless, it’s your alst letter which you must get naturally. either that or add a couple of “wild’ balls which match any letter and add $100 to the pot heck, they could maybe even add a couple of bonus balls to the hopper like prizes, cash amounts from $50-$250, “steal a letter” which lkets you take an opponent’s letter you need, etc. up the payoff to $2 x the number chosen, and the players earn the money in their banks rather than it going into one pot, that way a better player gets more money, while equally a worse player gets less and let them keep it win or lose.
the bonus baord I think does have a slight element of risk. one ep. (I think Wednesday’s) the contestant found “a supply of hot dogs”. so i guessing there are a few gag prizes on the board. They really should reveal the board afterwards so we can see just how close they really were to the big money.
All in all, I liked it, Patrick Duffy did a much better job than I thought he would, I’m sorry I ever doubted him. Crystal even occasioanlly gets to throw in a slight ad-lib.

I saw last Friday’s show and it was okay(3.5 stars) but I’m wondering if some episode will be shown on YouTube or have the numbers shown on this blog.
P.S. : Is the episode of 4/6/08 a repeat of any of the first five?

I commented about that whole “Hot Dogs” thing the other day. There are some “Zonks” on that bonus board, few and far between, but they are there.

The shows not bad, but the play at home cards are bull…I played with the maximim number of cards for three games in a row and every card would be one number away from a bingo. Then they give you realy high bonus numbers like 76 or 52, when they know the player is going to pick someones birthday on the 20th or the 3rd.
Karen
31April 10th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
I agree 100% with John…it’s not a bad show to watch, but it is totally “rigged” against the home players. The site has all the players email addresses and they need to send a list of winners every night to all players (if there are any winners) so we will know that we are not wasting our time, ink (which is so not cheap) and paper to print out 20 pages of cards.
Mike
32April 11th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Rigged? Is that really the best word to use?
The at-home game is like an instant lottery ticket–the result has been pre-determined, but you don’t know if you’re a winner until you see how the game plays out. That’s hardly rigged.
I have printed out exactly 0 pieces of paper thus far. It pays to find freeware which allows you to “print” directly into a PDF converter.
