New VP of Original Programming at GSN

Michael Bevan has been promoted to Vice President, Original Programming at GSN. Bevan, who has served as Executive Director of Programming since May 2005, has been behind some of GSN’s most popular shows including CAMOUFLAGE, CHAIN REACTION, and THE NATIONAL VOCABULARY CHAMPIONSHIP.

“Michael has been an instrumental voice in our game show programming,” commented Jamie Roberts, GSN’s Senior Vice President of Programming. “He’s consistently delivered for us, overseeing innovative shows like CAMOUFLAGE and, more recently, THAT’S THE QUESTION, which came to fruition quite nicely under his guidance.”

Bevan will continue to oversee original series and development projects for the network. His GSN credits also include EXTREME DODGEBALL, BALLBREAKERS and BIG BUCKS: THE PRESS YOUR LUCK SCANDAL, one of the highest rated original programs in the network’s history. He brings to the post over two decades of entertainment experience with a rich background in development and production at various broadcast networks including ABC, CBS, and PBS. Bevan has also developed and produced several concepts for Sony Online Entertainment.

Temptation comment post

We forgot to post this earlier. Feel free to comment about Temptation here.

Some people have chimed in.  Here are my thoughts…   If you go in expecting something besides a continuation from where Sale of the Century left off 18 1/2 years ago, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.  The mish-mosh of mini-games was decent.  Rossi Morreale came across as a much better emcee than expected, but with room for improvement.  The whole shopping at home gimmick doesn’t do a thing for me.  The pacing of the show left a lot to be desired i.e. it ended way too early.  (Maybe this gets cleared up in non-celebrity shows.)  By first impressions only, Temptation appears to be the most solid new syndicated game show in at least a decade, possibly since the short-lived gem The Challengers from 17 years ago.  I gave Temptation an 8 out of 10.  That title could easily be transferred to Merv Griffin’s Crosswords in five days.

Official GSN press release for That’s the Question S2

bobgoen.jpg

(Santa Monica, CA) – Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007 – GSN is bringing THAT’S THE QUESTION back for a second season on Tuesday, September 11. Produced by Scott Sternberg Productions and hosted by Bob Goen (“Entertainment Tonight,” “Miss Universe”), the fast-paced word game will air Tuesday thru Saturdays from 9:00 – 9:30 PM, ET.THAT’S THE QUESTION is a half-hour series that combines word scrambles with a test of world history and pop culture trivia knowledge. Contestants compete against each other in a race to discover a question.

Clues to the question are revealed by unscrambling words that contain one extra letter, which is, upon being unscrambled correctly, dropped into its proper place in the question, a la “Hangman.” The players take turns for the opportunity to unscramble clue words and guess what the question is, while earning valuable points to determine who goes to the final round. In the final round, the winner’s score translates into seconds of time they have to correctly identify a question and its answer. If they are successful, their prize goes from $500 to $5,000.

Widely popular in numerous countries around the globe, THAT’S THE QUESTION is currently setting ratings records in the Netherlands, Switzerland and France.

Goen, who served as host of “Entertainment Tonight” from 1993 to 2004, began his broadcast career as a sportscaster and then made the transition to his life-long dream: hosting game shows. Among his credits are “Wheel of Fortune” and “The Hollywood Game.” He is also known globally from hosting the “Miss Universe,” “Miss USA,” and “Miss Teen USA” pageants.

Widely acknowledged for his success in producing a variety of television genres, Sternberg’s credits include such top-rated hits as “Hollywood Squares,” “Love Connection,” “Rock and Roll Jeopardy,” “The Extreme Gong Show” and “Wheel of Fortune for Kids.” Among his most recent projects are “Square Off,” “Sunday Morning Shootout,” “My First Time” and “Spying on Myself.”

EW writer tries hand at hosting Temptation

Adam B. Vary, a writer for Entertainment Weekly, was given an opportunity to play the role of Rossi Morreale on the set of Temptation.  You can see video of Mr. Vary’s time at Temptation here.  Disregard Mr. Vary’s hosting abilities and pay attention to the show itself.  My excitement level for Temptation went from “eager to see it but don’t have much faith in its success” to “the MyTV preview in 4 days can’t get here soon enough”.  Enjoy!

Merv Griffin’s Crosswords preview on NBC on Sat. 9/8

TheFutonCritic.com reports that NBC will preview Merv Griffin’s Crosswords at 8:30 PM Eastern/7:30 PM Central on Saturday, September 8, following the network’s fall preview special. This makes the second primetime game show preview of that week, following Temptation’s back-to-back episode preview on MyNetworkTV on Wednesday, September 5.

I’ve heard at least one market has no affiliates showing either show. At least that market and possibly others have a chance to see the new offerings.

The Price is Right S36 Changes

From our good friends at Golden-Road.net…

  1.  Syd Vinnedge is the new Executive Producer of the show.
  2. The main theme is being redone in stereo.  The tune will stay the same.
  3. Some set changes will be made.

Let the arguing about why Roger Dobkowitz wasn’t picked as EP begin.

No “Deal” for the DS until August

Until today, gamestop.com and gamespot.com had Deal or No Deal for the Nintendo DS as being available this Tuesday, July 3.  That date has been pushed back to August 7.  Gamespot.com lists the Game Boy Advance version as being released on July 17.  Destination Software added some screen shots of the DS game within the past few days.  Gamestop.com has the DS game listed at $29.99.  Hopefully that price drops a bit because I’m not overly impressed with the graphics and because most, if not all of Destination Software’s previous DS titles have had pricepoints of $20.  Outside of being listed as “coming soon” on Destination’s web site, there is no news about Deal for the Wii.

Deal or No Deal video game update

In the last week, I mentioned that Deal or No Deal is coming to the Nintendo DS in June.  I brought up the idea of a Wii version of Deal.  According to Destination Software’s website, versions of Deal or No Deal will be available for the DS, the Game Boy Advance, and……the Nintendo Wii.  When we get more information about these games, it will be posted here.
