AP: Rosie’s Out of “Price is Right” Job Hunt

I ever tell you how sick I am of Rosie O’Donnell and The Price is Right news? Rosie said that she had a nice lunch with producers on Friday, but has suddenly changed her mind and stated “Well, here’s the thing: I really don’t need a job. I’m in a weird position. I don’t need the money. So to get my entire family uprooted from their lives and move them across the country so that I can have a fantasy childhood indulgence, you know, job … it just doesn’t seem fair.” Rosie hails from New York.

So there you go, now she’s gone yet again. I’ve kept my mouth shut, but I’ve gotten so many negative emails that I figured I’d throw in my two cents. It’s at least in my opinion that Rosie O’Donnell was one of the few chances for the show to be assured to stick around a bit more. I don’t think she was the greatest choice on Earth, but I just don’t see any of the other relatively unknowns such as the horribly annoying Todd Newton doing anything. I just see this entire situation mimicking the whole CBS News fiasco. They get a new host in, people watch it for a few days out of curiosity, and then quickly turn it off. I think they need to worry about making sure the viewers come around in bigger numbers in anticipation of a large drop-off, and to do that they need a high profile host.

Yes, Rosie made some outlandish comments on The View, but that was her job. She knows more than enough to now bring this to The Price is Right. Again, I don’t think she would be the best Price is Right host, but in this tricky period in the show’s history, they need some name recognition to carry it on, at least in my opinion. She surely wouldn’t make me want to watch the show any more or less than I do now, which is rarely, to be honest. Right now, at least in my eyes, if CBS wants to make sure the show sticks around for at least three more years, they need to be looking at Drew Carey. Plus I think he’d make a pretty good host anyway.

  • R.V. says:

Drew Carey is too laid back. Rosie O’Donnell would have gone all Oprah on the losing contestants, like when she gave the two Llama Millionaire contestants new cars on her show. And I don’t see any rationale for NOT going with Todd Newton, my personal front-runner for the job (now that Peter Tomarken is not with us anymore).

  • Nick Todor says:

Ehh, I’m not sure Drew Carey would be the best choice. I just can’t see him up on stage saying “Here’s the next item up for bids…”

  • Scott says:

Todd Newton would be a big mistake. He couldn’t fill Tomarken’s shoes on Whammy!, and he surely cannot fill Barker’s shoes (though I’ve never really liked him much). If they pick the right host, I may be watching again.

Don’t rule Drew Carey out…he hosted Play For A Billion just fine, is a good ad-libber, family friendly enough, and if he does well on Power of 10, watch for CBS to slide him on over to Price. It would make Price a different type of show, and no one would compare him to Barker. If Saget can be a good host (and he is), so can Carey.

But I’d rather see the only true heir take the reins…Tom Bergeron (note to Les Moonves — get out your wallet and buy out Tom’s Disney exclusivity contract, and let the guy host whatever else he wants! Look at what you paid Katie Couric and look what you’re getting for that. Price is a goldmine. It needs a worthy host.) Most important decision CBS will make for some time.

  • Mike says:

Todd Newton would be the perfect choice if his excitement level went from Whammy!/triple espressos during each stoppage, down to a composed but exciteable level like he was on Hollywood Showdown. Todd’s a fan of the genre, he knows TPiR, and he’s been hosting TPiR Live! for several years.

CBS needs to find someone soon if they don’t want to air reruns starting in the Fall…

  • Brandon says:

Todd Newton is a very competent host. Notice the only time he was ever out of his element was on “Whammy” and that was really just the first season. I think he’d do pretty well.

Rosie would be a good fit, as she’s well aware that Price is not a venue for her political opinions. And I don’t think she’d have the power to give away cars on general principle, because it’s not her show. I still remember her week on “Hollywood Squares”, where she bluffed, then blatantly shook her head to tell the contestant to disagree.

  • Marc Power says:

When it comes to Todd Newton I liked his performance on Powerball:instant Millionaire which had a lot of TPIR elements in it. But he’s not a big enough name.

Tom Bergeron would be awesome no doubt about it.

Drew Carey hmm.. I’ll wait for The Power of 10 before I make a call on that since I’ve only seen him host whoose line.

More later, I’ve got a thunderstorm coming and need to shut down the computer.

  • Mike says:

Unless Fremantle/CBS pays out the nose for Bergeron, it isn’t happening. ABC surely wouldn’t want to lose the current host of ABC’s most popular quasi-reality show ever (AHV) and the host of ABC’s hottest reality property in Dancing with the Stars without recouping a healthy chunk of change.

  • Intelligentfan777 says:

    Rosie’s out……..THANK GOD!

Todd would be good if his excitement level is toned down a little, but still enthusiastic enough to shows that he cares about the contestants winning.

Tom would be awesome for the job, but it’s not happening ’cause ABC doesn’t want to lose him, and understandably so.

John O’Hurley, Great on Feud, would be great for TPIR, but he may just be tied down with Feud right now.

CBS, make a good choice, and don’t screw this up!

  • The Great Butler says:

I continue saying give Todd a chance. How many of you can honestly say you have seen him hosting Price? I have……back in 2004. He was totally different than his Whammy persona then and time only makes it better. Sometimes I wonder if some people aren’t just wishing for Price to go away for whatever reasons they conceive….

Rumours say Bob Goen’s interested in the job, he’d be one to look at too.

  • Patrick says:

I still can’t get over Rosie’s statement: she doesn’t need the money? Must be nice. She doesn’t think living a childhood dream — one that she’s talked about for YEARS — is suddenly “worth it?” That sounds to me like a line that could have been devised to allow her to save face if the reality was that the producers weren’t as impressed with her as she seems to want us to believe.

The fact is, if you have all the money you need, and you have this childhood dream, you can afford to make it work, whether having a home on each coast or commuting first class all the way.

At least now we probably won’t have to listen to stories about Rosie WANTING to host the show.

My top pick is Todd Newton. I also think Tom Bergeron could do a good job. I wouldn’t be upset if they could get Marc Summers.

Mark Steines might be okay, too. He’s got some personality; it’s just a shame that you have to sit through the tabloid mess they’ve turned “Entertainment Tonight” into to see it.

I don’t see George Hamilton or John O’Hurley doing the show. Hamilton feels too much like they’re trying to find someone too much like Barker; O’Hurley strikes me as being too fake. Drew Carey? I don’t see that at all!

I’m not one of those who’s going to promise to stop watching IF they pick “so and so.” I’m going to watch, no matter who they pick, because I like the show. I’m willing to give anyone a chance; but this prolonged search is just embarrassing. Barker’s 83. It’s inconceivable to me that they had NOTHING on the drawing board!

  • PlumCrazy says:

Never thought I would defend Rosie, but she’s right not to uproot her family. Though if she really wanted the job (which I’m glad she doesn’t), she could do like they’ve been doing lately…tape 3 shows a day and then she could fly back to NY for the rest of the week. They could even do like they do with Wheel of Fortune…tape an entire season’s worth of episodes in 30 days.

If she were to host, I can see a pricing game for a car and her saying, “It costs how much for that car? It’s all because of George Bush and inflation. The price of that car is equal to the number of people killed in the Iraq war.” lol

  • Intelligentfan777 says:

Yeah I know, Rosie’s off her (bleeping) Gourd! :p

  • Stephanie says:

I’m not giving up on my choices, not by a longshot. I still hope either Todd Newton or Rich Fields gets the job

  • mrquiz says:

See…what’d I tell ya? I knew Rosie wouldn’t get this gig. As for Drew Carey? THe only thing that could qualify him to host TPIR (and boy, is THIS a stretch), is that if he dropped about 50 lbs, he could freak some poeple out into thinking that BILL CULLEN came back from the dead!
(admit it, with those glasses and crewcut, he DOES bear a slight facial resemblence to the REAL dean of game shows!)

All silliness aside, Hamilton could pull it off; but Todd Newton would be my first choice, followed by Bob Goen and Marc Summers (who unsuccessfully tried to get the gig on the ill-fated version hosted by DOUG DAVIDSON).

  • Scott says:

Saw this in Variety today — Could Dan Patrick be available in time? He wants to try “something different” …

    Patrick exits ESPN’s ‘SportsCenter’
Longtime anchor’s final show set for Aug. 17

    By JOHN DEMPSEY

Saying he wants to “try something different,” Dan Patrick has resigned from ESPN after 18 years as an anchor of “SportsCenter.”
Most recently, Patrick was host of “NBA Countdown,” the studio program preceding pro-basketball games on ABC, including the primetime NBA Finals.

Patrick has also hosted ESPN Radio’s “Dan Patrick Show” since 1999. Patrick will devote his last radio broadcast, scheduled for Aug. 17, to reflecting on the show’s most memorable segments.

In a statement, Patrick said, “I’ve spent a third of my life at ESPN. All my children were born while I was employed here.” He added that “I have extremely mixed emotions about leaving.”

  • Mike says:

    Scott,

A lot of Google news links say that Patrick himself has said he’s not interested in the TPiR job. I think he’s too dry. One ex-ESPNer I think would do a good job is Keith Olbermann. However, he’s not doing too badly with his little show on MSNBC.
