Posted by Alex Davis as CBS, The Price is Right, Video
We had our second millionaire in the three episodes of Drew Carey’s $1,000,000 episodes of The Price is Right. And by this point all I’m saying is, “I really don’t care anymore.”
Congratulations for him on winning. But it’s getting a bit insane. I really rarely watch The Price is Right when it’s on; I have classes and a career; but I’ve heard that a double showcase win has happened an extremely large amount of times. Now we have two on the million dollar episodes? Isn’t that a bit much? I thought the $1,000 range was fine initially. Apparently it needs to be a bit tougher. Of course CBS doesn’t care. I keep hearing that the show will be way over budget and offer crappy prizes which really amuses me. These specials are doing fantastic in primetime on Fridays. If they keep doing this well, CBS will give them more and more money and that million isn’t going to really be a huge issue. They’re fun specials, but I’m completely losing care of anyone winning a million dollars now, and that’s just not good.

I understand your opinion; having two million dollar winners in three episodes does seem like a bit much and makes it less special. However, I think you’re overreacting a tiny bit. Even at a $1,000 range, it’s still very difficult to guess that. Sure, it’s easier, but not by much. I’m fine with the way the format is.

I think we need to withhold judgment about the range a bit. I mean, how often on the daytime show do we see differences of $1000 or less. I think that it was just an aberration, and we should see no more $1,000,000 DSW wins this set of MDSes.

1st episode of Power of 10: $1,000,000 winner.
1st episode of Drew’s TPiR MDS: $1,153,908 winner.
Latest MDS: $1,127,062 winner.
Screw the Million Dollar Mission, just have Drew guest-host Deal or No Deal! They’ll give away the million then!

Speaking of Power of 10, does anyone know for sure if it’ll be back this summer?

I really think they should’ve just kept the range at $250. Two millionaires in such quick succession is absurd. In fact, I’m starting to agree with those who say they should ditch the million dollars and just stick to offering snazzier prizes than the daytime version. But I guess that would make the show look cheap in some “average” viewers’ eyes.

I think $500 should be for Both Showcases and standard $250 for the Million… but they could keep it like this, it’s obviously working.
And just so I could get that damn Promo Song out of my head - THAT’S WHAT I LIKE ABOUT DREW!

Amazing how low-key Drew was this time, and he didn’t look sick at all. Nothing like the Pof10 win that first show. “He won a million bucks !!” Of course, the contestant reax needed no help at all… Nice to see Drew do what Bob Barker never could do in his hostings of the MDS. It is NOT easy to nail the Showcase within a grand at that levels. All CBS needs to do is make the lower-range showcase higher priced, and no more $Million wins…

for all those tweakers (those wanting the million/dbl showcase rules tweaked) I could go with $1,000 for DSW and $500 for the million, oh wait this last guy still would of won the million :)

I’m joining Chris S.! Let’s have Drew host Deal or No Deal! Drew’s used to having two or three shows airing at the same time. Howie’s gonna be busy with syndie DoND, so it’s a perfect fit. :) Drew for President 2008!

I was in the audience for this show and it seemed like everyone thought that Michael was way under on his showcase… at least until they rolled the confetti launcher on the stage. By that point Drew definitely knew someone won $1M and knew who won because he was told to reveal Jason’s Showcase difference first.
I think that they made the $1000 range because they WANTED to give away $1,000,000. While I don’t think they expected more than one $1M winner, they wanted at least one just for a ratings boost - as we’ve seen the Price is Right ratings during the daytime have been down quite a bit. And it seems it has worked as the ratings for these MDS’s have gone up each week. Interesting to note that in both instances when they gave away the $1,000,000 in the showcase, it was the OTHER showcase that was the DSW-friendly one ($80,xxx and $45,xxx are more DSW-friendly than $42,xxx and $84,xxx). Not to mention that since MDS showcases are upwards of 4 times the value of daytime showcases, it makes sense to up the DSW range to 4 times the amount of the daytime version.
Keep in mind that the $1M prizes are insured - so whether they are won or not, it’s costing CBS the same amount of money… if all 12 $1M prizes were won, great! It won’t kill the budget because those insurance policies were bought before any of the shows were taped. Remember that the primetime budget is separate from the daytime budget, and it seems that the daytime budget is still way over simply because they made many games much easier to win, and therefore more games were won, and this leads to being overbudget as the season goes on.
I hope CBS doesn’t order another batch of MDS’s too quickly after the remaining 3 MDS’s in the can are aired… I agree it would dilute the “specialness” of primetime TPIR.

I agree with Chris S., too. ;) (Let’s also remember Drew gave away $1 million on Play for a Billion too. *nods*)
The night of the first Drew-hosted MDS, my dad came upstairs (where I’d just finished watching said MDS) and mimicked the then-latest DOND promo where Howie was wondering why he couldn’t give away a million bucks. My response: “Because he’s not Drew Carey.”
I’ve no problem with the current MDS format. IMO, it should be earned and not based on sheer luck, like it seems the BB-hosted ones were (spin wheel, land on 1.00 space). I also see nothing wrong with increasing the DSW limit to $1000 or less. How often does someone guess a Showcase in that range anyway — in either primetime or daytime? Not too often.

Exactly!!!
There isn’t anything wrong with MDS’s! They’re better than they have ever been! The change in format did it good, and I hope we continue to see specials every season. I’ve been to other boards about this subject, for the most part, everyone approves of this shows, and Alex is kind of in the minority.
Well…….YOU ARE!

My god, do you have to shout every message you make? 9 times out of 10 you do.
I didn’t say the format is bad. I’m saying that I think it’s been proven the $1K range is too easy. Maybe this was an unbelievable fluke that it was won, I don’t know. But there has been an unbelievable amount of double showcase wins this season already alone. It’s becoming nothing incredibly special to get one anymore.

Telling off the head honcho. Yeah, that’s an INTELLIGENT thing to do.
You’re not always right. In fact, I think you’re more often incorrect than you are correct. Your perfectionism and jingoism has grown very tiring.
And the $1000 spread for $1M is ridiculous. $500 is a little more challenging. For such a large amount of money, the regular $250 range is more than fair.

I really don’t care if people tell me off. I encourage it sometimes. But when it contributes nothing to the conversation and happens far too often from someone, it gets highly annoying.

It really bothers me that to win the million dollars in the pricing games, you have to do something out of the ordinary like play the game perfectly, but to win the million in the Showcase, all they have to do is get a double Showcase win.
What they need to do is keep the double Showcase win range at $1,000, but give them the million only if the contestant is $250 or less away. That way, the million dollars will be harder to win…but still winnable.
That seems right and fair, doesn’t it? ^_^

correct me if im wrong but if they had the $1,000 rule for $1,000,000 bob still wouldn’t have given a mil away.
On the specials I saw the winning contestant was on average $30 grand off, and even one time over $100,000 off.

Heh, hey Trent, the contestant that was off by $100,000+ was Daniel from the Bob 80th birthday special. But it was on purpose!
Reason? He strategically (and correctly) thought the other contestant went OVER on her Showcase and bid $1. He won that Showcase.
Also, the MDS that was held over from Season 33 (the third in that particular series) actually did have a contestant come within $1,000 of the ARP of the Showcase. So in actually, if the rule had been in place, that contestant would have won the million.

So when someone wins the Million, I guess they’re being paid in an annuity? (10, 20+ years) and as far as winning over $1 million in cash and prizes, who the hell is gonna be able to pay the taxes? How long would they give you to pay on those cars and the cash? Just some thoughts.
I think the $1000 is just fine IMO, considering there’s upwards of $80,000+ worth of stuff, it’s not THAT easy, the past two contestants have just been lucky, EXTREMELY lucky at that. There’s times when I play along and either MISS the mark or go WAY under in fear of going over.

No - the $1,000,000 prizes are paid out as a lump sum minus 7% taxes just like if you had won any other prize on TPIR. Adam who won the first $1 million (and I helped with the showcase bid and ran on stage with - I don’t think it was lucky, but I did talk with Adam about showcase bid shaving outside in line in the 12 hours we were camped outside of the CBS gates) told me that they took out 45% of that for taxes and that was deducted from what he will receive.
