American “The Cube” Pilot Shooting Soon

Thanks to our friends at Bother’s Bar for pointing this out.  All the complaining and moaning we did about how Fox dropped The Cube was not for nothing apparently.  Audience service website Lost In TV has listings up for a new US edition of the hit UK game show The Cube.  The pilot will be taping on the English set to save costs and we’ll see where it goes from there.  If you’re one of our UK readers you can get tickets here.  It tapes February 4th and you need to be there at 6:00PM.  If you go and tell us who it’s for we’ll shower you with praise and adulation.

Now comes the fun game of what network does this go to.  Obviously NBC doesn’t need it because they masterfully copied The Cube wholesale for Minute to Win It.  This is basically going to rest on if Fox still owns the rights.  After the Our Little Genius fiasco, Fox may need something and if they still have the rights to the format they may be going with it after all.  One person on Twitter suggested this could be the syndicated companion show to Fifth Grader that Twentieth Television (related to Fox) announced.  That’s a distinct possibility.  Other than that I have no idea.  I’m doubting GSN right now since they are not doing game shows anymore really

This is a nice vindicating moment for how NBC ripped off The Cube with Minute to Win It.  We actually got two very enthusiastic comments about Minute to Win It from someone who apparently wanted to remain anonymous in commenting.  It was regarding the negative review I gave of the taping and what’s come out.  The thing is the comment traces back to near Los Angeles, California.  It’s either an NBC representative or the most enthusiastic audience member ever, or a production person obviously.  All I want to say is if it’s a network or a production person and there is some issue with what I’ve said, don’t hide behind the ability to be anonymous here.  Say something to me personally; I don’t care.  I’ve had far worse said to me.  Emails to me are completely confidential.  There’s nothing I can do about comments.  The person did nothing but prove everyone’s point.  It’s not just me saying it’s a xerox copy.  People who have just read the rules and similarities are even saying it.

But regardless, I’m overjoyed to see The Cube getting the chance it deserves here, I wish it all the luck in the world, and let’s cross our fingers this pilot gets picked up.

Edit: Retracted something.  Some error on mine of a city near Los Angeles.  I clearly don’t live there.

Just a small point – NBC offices in Oak Park??? Oak Park is a tiny little residential community in the middle of nowhere near rural Agoura. I have no doubt that some NBC employees might live there, but I've never heard of any NBC offices there. Unless they are undercover and masquerading as stables.

(This will make you think that I’m crazy, but……) Something in my head’s telling me this is the show that will be paired with Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader. If that’s the case, that wouldn’t be a bad pairing, although in some cities it will likely air on different stations. Cross your fingers for it to air in the Fall of 2010.

Apparently a few of us had that thought about The Cube being paired with 5th Grader. One was on Twitter, I posted the same on Facebook before I saw it here, and somebody posted it in the Fifth Grader Companion story in Minibuzz…

So… heck… if it's not actually their plan, it sure is a popular and well-liked idea! :D

Let's hope we don't get anymore spoilers when it cuts to commercial.

It seems the US is not the only location getting a "the cube" version. They are also filming for a Saudi Arabian version of the Cube, and even going so far as paying 25 quid per audience member to attend.

I hope it comes into primetime. We need more primetime game shows, even though the syndie shows are doing pretty well in the ratings. remember Cash Cab is coming to broadcast syndie this Fall, so 5th Grader might get paired with that!

Cash Cab RERUNS are coming to syndication, not first run shows. The first run will still be on Discovery.

Great news! I love The Cube, simplistic yet addicting, the best new game show since Millionaire.

Also, Cash Cab is being syndicated by MGM, not 20th. If something gets paired with 5th Grader, it will be a 20th Television production.

I made a retraction, dumb fault of mine. I googled something and I apparently didn't read it close enough, my fault completely.

I'm not trying to start a fight with anyone there, I'm just saying telling me paid audience members cried and that Guy isn't cheesy doesn't hide the fact that it's basically universally accepted that it's The Cube without the plexiglass cube.

I really hope this is a good sign for The Cube to possibly come into prime time! We need some prime-time game shows!

I think ABC might try picking this up, especially since "I Survived a Japanese Game Show" doesn't seem likely to be renewed for a third season (which is a shame, in my opinion; I know some of you, probably many if you, might disagree, but I personally liked it). The Cube could benefit from the summer lead-in from Wipeout.

i think fox is picking this up they have the little genus set all they have to do is put a huge glass cube on the set and bam you have the cube. All they need is a good host and this can knock Perfect 10 out of the water I would like to see Marc Summers host the cube

  • QuartrGuy says:

My best guess as far as a host? If they can't make a deal with the UK host, I'd say Mark L. Wahlberg. And just for the record, there's a difference between glass and plexiglass.

Confirmed – I have a ticket for this. I'll be letting you all know what it's like and – if I hear – where it's going (and if they don't mention a network, I'd imagine syndication).
