In the category of news that basically everyone knows by now but I was really busy yesterday, Al Roker has been announced as the host of NBC’s primetime celebrity run of the hit syndicated game show Family Feud. The announcement was made on Monday’s Today show to make for some nice cross promotion there. John O’Hurley will still host the syndicated run.
The basics of the game appear to be the same. However, thankfully, they won’t stretch one game to an hour. Three games will apparently be played. The winner of game one will face off against the winner of game two in a final match for money. Celebrity teams will consist of a celebrity and his or her family, or perhaps a TV family. However, these celebrities have not been announced yet.
Al’s recently guest hosted Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, that of which he didn’t do badly at, but I always felt he would be more suited for something like this. Of course this does mean we don’t get who I truly feel is the Feud’s best host since Richard Dawson, John O’Hurley. He seems to be very busy though. I can see Roker doing very well though. More specifics of the show will hopefully be announced soon.

You also might remember that he hosted a game show on MSNBC called REMEMBER THIS back in the mid-1990’s. He also got nominated for Best Game Show Host as well. I think Al Roker will do an equally good job as FAMILY FEUD host like all the others including the fantastic John O’Hurley.

“that of which he didn’t do badly at”..lol.
And I don’t think O’Hurley is that great. He’s way too stiff; not great at improv, which is essential to be a good game show host.

He’d remind me of Karn a little…very friendly and supportive but could slow the show down with one to many jokes/interactions…I dunno…I’d rather have the continuity…I agree though bout O’Hurley, not the best since dawson but best of the 90-2000s version but I like Karn more than other people do, He kinda stopped caring after a while, though which is a MAJOR no no…Also I’d argue that with celeb versions a more outragous host makes it better because the celebs can play off of him/her…one look at celeb link (albeit WAY overdone) and the way Combs fed off of his many celeb weeks shows this.
I still say the Feud Hosts go: Dawson, Combs (Yes he was very bombastic, but he had his way with contestants too, gone too soon), O’Hurley, Karn, Anderson (Seriously, how did this version survive 3 years of him???).

i think if they ever do another game show marathon Al Roker would be perfect for it, he’s a game show fan so he knows the shows, and he can itneract well with celebs. maybe this could be testing grounds for it, I look forward to seeing this I don’t know if roker will be as good as O’hurley but it will definitely be enjoyable.

FAMILY FEUD has had the best following of game show hosts. Richard Dawson, Ray Combs, Louie Anderson, Richard Karn, John O’Hurley, and coming up Al Roker. That great list can go on in the future years.

I think Al Roker is a good choice. In responce to Gabel, it seems to me like FF would be one of the easiest game shows to host. It would be hard to screw it up (but Louie seemed to do it!) TWL, WWTBAM, DOND, etc. u need to have that “you are playing for BIG MONEY, this is serious” quality. Win Lose or Draw, Super Password, Match Game, etc. you need to be very loose. But on FF u can either be as loose as u are on Super Password and Match Game or u can be a little more professional. There’s more leeway. However Al Roker does seem like a good choice nonetheless.

This only saddens me that the syndie version will continue to be saddled with O’Hurley, who imo is much more suited to the formality of a panel show—I actually consider his performance on TTTT better than Collyer’s (but then again, I never liked Collyer anyway)
Too bad this isn’t on ABC, otherwise I would have loved to see Tom Bergeron get a crack at it.

IIRC, wasn’t Al Roker who Freemantle wanted to host when Anderson was ousted? They couldn’t get a contract together, and they ended up going with Richard Karn. I think he’s going to be great, but not any better than John O’Hurley. I think O’Hurley might be the best host since Ray Combs. I have never been a big Dawson fan, since I grew up with Ray Combs hosting, and barely knew who Richard Dawson was. I thought Richard Karn, while he had some really annoying sayings (”I’m DOUBLING THE POINTS!!!!!” *APPLAUSE!!!!* and “First blood”), he wasn’t all that bad. He was just not right for the show, IMO. Louie Anderson is a great stand-up comedian, but a horrible game show host. I think John O’Hurley is a great host. I love his charisma, his sense of humor, and his quick wit with the contestants. We shall see how good Al Roker is at hosting Feud. I can understand why NBC decided to throw their own shill in to host, but was O’Hurley even considered to host his own show?

Yeah… I can definatly see him doing a better hosting gig with Feud than Millionaire. Al seems like the guy that goes better with multiple contestants than singles. Meredith is the 1 on 1 type of host, which explains why the syndicated Millionaire is still a hit to this day. She does great on that. I cannot wait to see how Al does with this.
One other good thing about him doing this on NBC… it breaks the stand-up comic chain of game show hosts on NBC. Of course Bob and Howie are great hosts; dont get it twisted.

It should probably be mentioned here too that John O’Hurley is hosting “Secret talents of the Stars” so maybe that’s why they didn’t get him for this. I think he made a mistake that type of show seems out of his element IMO.

O’Hurley and Craptastic BS of the “stars” should be canned asap… :)

Note as well that O’Hurley, in addition to hosting Secret Talents, appears regularly in the Las Vegas production of “Spamalot” at Wynn Las Vegas. O’Hurley, who lives in Las Vegas, frequently works the “Vegas Broadway circuit” during his Feud off-time.
Given all that this guy does (hosting Feud and Secret Talents, appearing on stage, doing voiceovers, active involvement in two venture capital groups, co-owner of the real J. Peterman company AND being a husband and father), I don’t mind O’Hurley taking a little break to let Roker host the prime time show. Hopefully he could make a cameo with Roker on one episode.

Chris Parsley, looks like your dream came true. MSN reported that “Secrets” was canned after one episode brought in 4.6 million viewers and lost them quickly as the show continued.
CBS has been fast on the trigger this year!

I agree, Julia. John O’Hurley is the best host Family Feud had since Ray Combs (mat he rest in peace). And I’m shocked that it will be on NBC. I would’ve thought that it would be on its original home of ABC. I guess the price was too much for ABC.
