Afternoon Morning Buzz for May 18, 2011
OK, it was a very busy morning and we had other things to write about, so the window of the Morning Buzz closed. So it’s the Afternoon Morning Buzz. Make sense? Not really. Onward!
*The first preview for ABC’s 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show is out. We made fun of the UK version a bit, saying that there was no point to watching the show beyond the exits. And even those were all basically just dropping people into a pool from above. Not that inventive. ABC went balls to the wall with this version. How about strapping people to the top of an airplane and taking off with them on it? This could out to be a very pleasant surprise and the perfect companion to Wipeout. Take a look below.
*Syndicated ratings are out. As always the numbers dip as we get better and better weather. Who wants to sit inside and watch TV when it’s this nice out? Everyone sunk the last report. Wheel of Fortune is down to 6.3, Jeopardy! to 5.2, Who Wants to be a Millionaire to 2.3, and Family Feud to 2.2.
*With all the new attention Pyramid is getting, someone sent me a pretty interesting link. A user on the website World’s Biggest Pacman, which lets users create their own Pacman levels and play anyone’s. Pretty fun time waster website. Someone made The $25,000 Pac-mid. Check it out here.
*GSN released a funny cut-from-the-show blooper from The Newlywed Game. Check it out. Always nice when we see stuff like this.
*And finally, here’s today’s game show schedule:
The CW: America’s Next Top Model at 8:00PM ET (repeat) and 9:00PM ET (new)
Fox: American Idol at 8:00PM ET (new)
NBC: Minute to Win It at 8:00PM ET (new) and 9:00PM ET (repeat)
GSN: Catch 21 at 5:00PM ET (new), The Newlywed Game at 6:30PM ET (new), Love Triangle at 7:00PM ET (new), Improv-A-Ganza at 8:00PM ET (new)

“101″ could be… um… special. The guy hosting it looks really familiar. Where have we seen him before?
Jeff Sutphen.He hosts Brainsurge.
Jeff Sutphen, who also did Nickelodeon’s BrainSurge.
Wait….Top Model and American Idol are game shows? Since when?
Well, technically there *is* a game involved…
The Newlywed Game has always been a funny show, but I still don’t like the change with no announcer this season. I know it is the same question, but I still can’t believe that GSN had to cut there budget that much for The Newlywed Game. I do know that there whole set moved to New York City (didn’t move literally), but I wish GSN would have kept that money for The Newlywed Game, with the turning set at the beginning and the announcer.
From yesterday, I think Baggage would do better at an earlier time (like 6:30), but since The Newlywed Game is already there, Oh well for me and the rest of the Baggage fans.
Starting June 6, I still think the schedule should be
5:00- Catch 21 (new)
5:30- 1 vs. 100 (I wish that would be new soon)
6:00- Lingo (new)
6:30- Baggage (new season)
7:00- Love Triangle
7:30- The Newlywed Game
8:00- Lingo
8:30- Baggage
9:00- The Newlywed Game
etc. etc.
But will it be? That is the question.
I’m all for the return of Pyramid and I always love a good game of Pac-Man, but that fusion of the two was way worse than playing the Atari 2600 version while being cheered on by John Davidson.
you can’t say head anymore??????????????
Not when it refers to a sex act, apparently.
…
I never thought I would type the words “sex act” on a game show blog.
Wow. To think I had always thought The NewlyWed Game had no limits when it came to sexual discussion and references. Still, to think they have a person come out in front of the contestant and confront them about what they can or cannot say in the middle of taping the show…or to tell them to come up with a more “cutsy” name…
Guess I never actually realized how much content is being cut from the final edited version of a game show (or in this case, a non-game-show).
Wonder why they just don’t “bleep” the word out like on other programs…
It would be interesting though if they did go to HBO or Showtime to see how “all out” they go lol
probably just because they have to write it on a card after. that’s why they didn’t just bleep it, but I think I remember seeing an older ep. where they censored themselves on the card writing just the first letter and a blank.
Well, back in the day they used “whoopee” instead of bleeping so I guess it’s kind of a tradition, maybe?
I Think for 101 Ways to Leave A Game Show, it would be funny if 1 was referred to as the Brain Drain
Seeing as its on ABC, I wonder if we’ll see references to any other recent/past ABC game shows like Wipeout or even Downfall in the exits.
101 ways to leave a game show scares me to be honest, some of the stunts look particualrly dangerous, I’m afraid of someone being killed.
Come to think of it, it”s a wonder nobody has been seriously injured on “Wipeout!”. (Perhaps there has been injury, but there have been arrangements to keep it hush-hush.)
Surely bounding in every possible way off he Big Balls, or taking a Sucker Punch “where it hurts” aren’t going to be very conducive to good health!
But then, consider that an Olympic beach-volleyball champion blew out her Achilles tendon on “Traipsing Down the. . .”–er, I mean “Dancing With The Stars”!
At that, it looks like the American version of “101 Ways. . . ” is not going to be dull or slow. Those who gnashed their teeth during the BBC version could be in for a surprise, if these trailers are any indication!
Let’s just see if it can do something no other show has done: hold the audience that tuned into “Wipeout!”.
I’m going to wait until I see a full episode of the US 101 Ways before I judge it, that promo doesn’t really show anything apart from the exits, which were still the best part of the UK version, it was the dreadful forced tension that made it unwatchable which I suspect will still remain. A run time of 42 mins rather than 55 will do nothing but benifit the format however.
