Actual Footage from GSN’s “1 VS 100″

Thanks to Mob member Chad Mosher for tipping me about the videos on Twitter. Be sure to check him out in the Mob this Monday.

It’s just six days before GSN’s revival of the popular NBC game show 1 VS 100 debuts and finally we have some things we can promote the show with.  The Carrie Ann Inaba quiz show will bow November 15th at 7:00PM ET.  The show sees one contestant face off against a Mob of 100 others by answering trivia questions.  The more Mob members who miss a question and get eliminated, the more money the One wins.  Knocking out all 100 wins the One $50,000.  Miss one question and the remaining Mob members split the money previously won.

GSN finally uploaded some clips of 1 VS 100.  It shows off some of the set, some footage of the show, and what to expect.  One of my biggest fears with the show was the lack of an actual Mob on set like the NBC version.  GSN decided to make the show daily and obviously GSN doesn’t have as big of a budget as NBC, so they elected to place them on a huge video screen.  After seeing the video, I have to say I’m impressed.  Take a look below.

If they had to have the Mob be video taped and placed on a monitor, they did just about as good a job recreating the look of the show within GSN’s budgetary level as they could have.  And at least the Mob “reacts” to right and wrong answers.  So yeah, given the obvious limits the network has, it appears they did a pretty good job.  We’ll see what happens when the actual show debuts next Monday, November 15th, at 7:00PM ET on GSN. I’m looking forward to it. Are you?

This is actually the one thing I’m regretting about giving up my cable. Gonna have to find another way to watch I guess…

  • Anthony Hardy "The Captain" says:

Well, they WERE gonna have Arsenioooooooooooooooooooo as host, but Carrie Ann’s fine by me. I was hoping to see Arseniooooooooooooooooo again as well as his Dawg Pound considering the fact that he hasn’t had much success since he stepped down from his late night talk show back in 1994.

As for the gameplay, it reminds me of Trivial Pursuit: America Plays with the pre-recorded Mob. At first, I thought it was nice to see 1 vs. 100 back on the air; I loved it when it aired several years back, especially with its original format. Now, with the pre-recorded Mob and the top prize of $50,000, I’m thinking, “Why not make it $100,000, $250,000, or even $500,000 and have the Mob inside the studio?” GSN has billions and billions of dollars…and this is the best they can do?

Overall, this revival seems mediocre. In the future, GSN should pull out something we all love out of their hat such as airing lots of classic game shows or keep their bread-and-butter shows (I hated it when they pulled the plug on Lingo) or use their money a little more wisely.

    • Ryan says:

GSN does not have “billions and billions of dollars”. It is a cable channel in the middle of a recession. For what they have, it looks good.

    • Ernest Goodwyn says:

GSN’s not bringing back classic shows. Those days are gone.

With that said, the preview clips do look promising. I’m not so caught up on the top prize, I could really care less if it was $50,000, a million, or anything between. I hate that they chose the Season 2 pay structure but oh well, nothing I can do about that. I am glad to see that it does look like the clever writing from the first season is returning. Don’t know about all that gold/yellow/whatever in the logo and the studio but that’s cosmetic and has no effect on the actual game. I’ll be sure to set the DVR for this. My skepticism has now shrunk some.

  • Thomas says:

Looks better than I expected. I’ll be sure to watch. The small top prize bothers me, but perhaps if it does well enough, they’ll be able to up it later.

  • MikeSant318 says:

Alex, I agree: for what GSN has to work with, on their prize budget, this is about as much as I could hope. I like that they brought in as much integrity as they were capable of doing, staying as close as they could to the look and feel of NBC’s version (I still think the per-player bounty should’ve been brought back, though), and it’ll be interesting to watch. I’m looking forward to playing along…for once in a great while, GSN, nicely done…

  • David says:

and it looks like they may be using the Season 1-type questions some of the time- I could make out two questions in the second clip:

“Emeril Lagasse runs out of marshmallows for his sweet potato casserole, so he uses some from what breakfast cereal?”

The answers are a little blurry for some reason, but you can make them out as:

    A- Lucky the Leprechaun’s
    B-Tony the Tiger’s
    C-Dig ‘Em the Frog’s

    the 2nd question is…well…

“A minute ago you were in the ocean, and now you’re totally shucked. What are you?”

    A-An Eel
    B-An Oyster
    C-A Squid

I do like the video wall though- looks pretty impressive.

    • David says:

(sorry, hit the submit button by mistake)

My one concern is that unless the questions are randomly picked in some form, the producers know exactly how many questions it will take for someone to knock out all of the Mob (since they would know their answers in advance). That seems off to me for some reason.

      • sVybDy says:

As long as they keep things rolling according to production order this isn’t a problem. For example, suppose they’ve ordered 26 shows, then they tape 26 games with the mob. Then contestants are chosen, perhaps by a person without foreknowledge of the mob’s results. No matter who Contestant #1 is, they play against the mob who played Game #1. No matter who Contestant #16 is, they play against the mob who played Game #16. As long as the producers aren’t hand-picking tough or easy mobs for certain players, it’s as legit as live results.

        • parliboy says:

The problem here is that we don’t know that there are any protections in place to keep production from removing questions from the stack based on removing mob members. There’s no firewall in place to separate the staffers managing the questions from the staffers managing the rest of the game. And I don’t expect S&P to properly intervene in this situation.

          • Wayne says:

If you really wanna get down to it, there is no way on any show that WE would know what was done behind the scenes, therefore why have any game shows on at all.

      • Adam S. says:

I have not yet seen the video clips, but I’ve gotta say I still miss the NBC version and wish Ben Silverman wasn’t stupid to cancel it. That was a big mistake b/c it was getting great ratings. When its sister show, DoND got the boot, that was the nail in the coffin for NBC.

        • parliboy says:

I’ve gotta say I still miss the NBC version and wish Ben Silverman wasn’t stupid to cancel it.

          Fixed that for you.

          • DeVares says:

Ben Silverman= the reason why NBC stands for “No Body Cares”.

On the subject at hand, I’m looking forward to it although I would have to TiVo it because it’s on at the same time as Family Feud is here.

  • jhshifris says:

But, will this last longer than [Bob]Saget’s version did? His version was only 28 episodes.

  • dropzone5 says:

I can’t really complain that much about the small top prize–I’m a fan of the Korean version, and it offers 50,000,000 won, which is about the same as $50K here. The Koreans still play by our 1st season prize structure, and the first rung there is 10,000 won–about $9 US! I’ve seen them average about a million and a half won by the 5th question, which is only about $1,400.

I’ll definitely have to check this out–this looks cooler than I thought!

  • gene says:

The show seems like its going to be decent (much better then what i thought) i wish they did have the mob on set even if they reduced it to 50 to fit them on the smaller set it would be so much better. I like hearing the Mob booing the contestant i thought they would use some of the nbc set i guess they destroyed it.

The dancing is going to eventually get annoying

  • Eric says:

As for the prize structure I don’t really see any other format that would make sense. What are you gonna make the first question $25/ mob member? as far as the pre-taped mob as long as there are no our little genius/21-like revelations I have no problem with it.
Looks pretty good for what GSN has for a budget.

  • KingErroneous says:

Maybe I’m just ignorant, but how is it more expensive to get 100 people in a studio together vs. separately to play their questions?

    • Alex Davis says:

I think it’s about having the giant set piece and studio space. I did features on the Dutch version far before NBC’s came out and they came to me asking about studio space and other videos. They came to the conclusion that they’d need two or three sound stages because the mob panel is mammoth, and there’s no real way to trim that down to a manageable size effectively without putting them in folding chairs.

  • David says:

This is GSN we’re talking about here. It’s not a surprise that the prize is lower, so I won’t harp on it. I just see it not living up to the NBC version in terms of the emotion involved. That said, it stands a decent chance of having a nice run.

    • Wayne says:

ya know, if we would just think of this as the “daytime” version, we wouldn’t be all in a tizzy over the dollar amount–really, it’s the game that matters here.

  • Mr. Fox says:

GSN doesn’t have any money for production or prizes? If only they weren’t an independent channel… if only they were co-owned by billon-dollar companies like DirecTV & Sony.

    • Wayne says:

If only those billion-dollar companies didn’t have to answer to their shareholders who demand profit from all divisions, then said billion-dollar companies would give GSN a larger budget to work with.

Television isn’t about being good anymore, it’s about being profitable–get used to it.

    • Julia says:

They are owned by Sony and Liberty media. They’re pretty big companies. The problem is that ratings are pretty small for the network.

  • Joe says:

I like it, I don’t mind the screen.

I only wish they went into a new direction with the set. I mean it looks like they did the best recreation they could with their budget, but why not go in a completely new direction, and avoid comparisons?

  • GSNSmashFan3 says:

I remember when I first heard about the digitally-inserted mob, I cringed. Then I thought, “I hope they’ll place each mob member in a seperate monitor and have 100 monitors for the mob.” This doesn’t look too bad, but it does look sorta awful when compared to what I thought for a while. I also didn’t like the thought of a $50,000 top prize when I first heard about it, a $100,000 or $250,000 would have been much better. But, we’ll just have to see the show when it airs.

  • Devon says:

Yes GSN is no NBC when it comes to budget but wow I’m amazed. GSN really did their homework. From the logo to the set to the graphics, it looks as if the NBC version never went away. The scaled down money ladder is getting no complaints from me. People pretty much know what to expect cash wise for GSN shows.
Also I have to admit the tired $1 million prize all the time is getting old. This is nice. I can’t wait to see this and Carrie Ann in action November 15th.

  • glenn says:

the video aspect STILL gives me Paranoia (A very confusing predecessor to 1 vs 100) nightmares but it still holds true to the format…still wish they used the per player bounty as well…but some of the dollar figures may would have been comically low.
