If you check out ABC’s website for their new game show tournament Duel, you can find a lot of new video clips. You can click here to see it also. One in particular is a two-question sneak peek of the show along with a video explaining the rules. For those who aren’t watching the clips, let’s do a quick rules explanation.
The player in control chooses an opponent. They each have 10 chips. Host reads a question, the players have as much time as they want to place a chip on every answer they think it is (they can put a chip on all four answers if they want). After they are done, they hit a green button to lock in. The right and wrong answers are shown. All right answer chips are returned to the player and wrong answer chips are taken away. Each chip is worth $5,000 and that money is added to the jackpot someone can win in the finale. If someone misses one question or runs out of chips, they lose. Each player can hit the “Pressure Button” twice a game which forces your opponent to answer in seven seconds.
Some positives to start: it’s a relatively hard trivia show, that of which we don’t see often. It looks nice and plays nice. It’s also rare that we get a show with actual competition in it. Also, a tournament show is not a common item. The idea of a tournament is really special for game shows because it’s basically the best player who wins the game, unlike many other shows today. The host, Mike Greenberg isn’t too bad either so far. He seems a bit stiff on this clip, and the whole “Screen Up/Down” thing is going to get annoying very quickly. However, this is likely the first episode and the first game, so there’s no reason to judge him off of this.
However, we got enough game play to know what’s going on, and I feel some what let down with Duel. They made this seem much bigger, grander, and strategic than it is. Honestly, it’s just Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and “Please let my opponent miss before I do.” There’s not much you can do for strategy with this. They keep trying to play a poker aspect up, and I just don’t see it. The only remotely sneaky thing you can do is quietly place a chip on the board and fake your opponent out. But even if you do that, who cares? If you ignore your opponent and regulate yourself to answering quickly and correctly using as few chips as possible, you don’t need to even to consider the person across from you.
The set’s nice and the whole thing is set up well. The trivia will be fun to play for a bit, but it’s basically another Millionaire ripoff, only a bit more obvious, with two lifelines instead of three. This judging is just from a small preview and other items. Hopefully it’ll be a bit more exciting and different on the air. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a pretty fun show (miles better than anything ABC has done so far) and probably better than 1 VS 100 currently because of their screwy scoring. However, there’s nothing in this show to make me forget that pre-2008 1 VS 100 and Power of 10 are a bit more exciting and fun than this. It’s just another clone brought into the game farm, albeit a much more enjoyable clone than a lot of shows in a while. I feel bad for countries that have this show without a tournament format.

I actually think I will like this. I like the betting, trivia, all that. I also like to watch tournament game shows because I make game show videos often and I get a lot of ideas from shows like this. But we’ll see.

Ok here’s the thing. I give EVERY new game show a chance. Always!!! I get EXCITED about every game show. Always!!! This one looks really good and the set looks incredible. Kinda reminds me of some scene I saw in The Empire Strikes Back but yeah as weird as that sounds, I can’t wait for this.

Based on the preview clip, I was thoroughly impressed. This looks like a challenging trivia game, and Greeny brought what appeared to be a classy persona to this game that is severely lacking in most of today’s new game show hosts. I’ll definitely be watching.

A classy persona is missing today? Am I missing something? I haven’t seen a single game show host in recent years that I would not call classy.

I really enjoyed the two question clip we saw, especially the ‘pressure’ effects. Admittedly, the host didn’t do anything for me, but he didn’t detract either. Perhaps I’ll like him more after the show airs. I think I’ll be flipping back and forth between this and ‘Clash of the Choirs.’

What I meant by ‘classy’ is that most of the new game show hosts (with a few MAJOR exceptions) let their personalities and jokes overshadow the game itself. Greeny wasn’t hyper, but he wasn’t dull, either. I think we can agree that most of the best game show hosts out there got that way by letting the game and the contestants have the spotlight. To me, that shows class.

I think a big part of the strategy is when to use the pressures. If you can bluff your opponent into THINKING you don’t know the answer enough that he uses one when you actually do and only need to put one chip down, that’s a big advantage, since he’ll have burned one of the two pressures you get for nothing- not even a single chip lost.
Another key point is when a player is in the danger zone-they have 3 or fewer chips remaining, and so they can’t cover all the answers. Using a pressure then could be useful (especially if they have more of those math questions- trying to do the math and place the chips in 7 seconds could spook a player- and they may be forced to use all their remaining chips, so even if they get it right, they’d then be in sudden death from then on). Knowing when to take a calculated risk will be key too-if you’re not sure of the answer, but can reasonably narrow it down, by not putting chips on every answer will save you chips in the long run.

Well, I’ll put the cart before the horse and hope that this replaces Temptation in syndie land. With a smaller money/contestant scale, there can be weekly tournaments with a champ every Friday. Then, have a tournament of weekly champs for a larger jackpot.
I’ve listened/watched Greeny alot, so I like him, and I think he was chosen so the game/players have the spotlight.

The word that first came to mind for me concerning the host was ‘intense.’ I don’t know, but that impression really channels a feeling of intensity to the game itself.
As for the poker thing, maybe they missed out on one aspect of poker–you are rewarded. In this game, I think it might add to it if they gave the players 1 chip for every chip they had on the right answer. It might make the games super long, but it would certainly add something. What do you guys think?

It’s too bad with “Grand Slam” begin show this year that we couldn’t get those contestants from that show, minus Amy Kelly and Victor Lee who I felt should not have been in the tournament, and see in this format would could “outduel” their opponent. If this works, maybe ABC could consider this as a special tournament. That I would love to see.

If the UK version of Duel ends up being as good as that preview clip looks, I’ll be pleased; I have to say, this genuinely looks like a very engaging quiz - Greenberg is playing it serious, but I applaud him for that - I think he’s struck the tone just about right; from the clip, it looks like the gameplay is fairly pacey, and the Pressures work well - I don’t really agree with Alex that this is largely derivative of Millionaire, most quizzes since 1998 share some form of element with it, and you can’t single this show out.
Is Duel the most hugely innovative format ever? No. Is this going to be a sound and entertaining quiz? Most likely.

I think this will turn out better than ABC previous bombs ( Show Me The Money which I would have liked the questioning with mulitiple choices but that’s just me) Set for Life I never got to see but from the sounds of it I didn’t miss much. National Bingo Night I didn’t love this and i didn’t totally hate it but the only thing I really liked was to watch people stand up when they were one away from a bingo that was the only thing that left me really on the edge of my seat. From the previews that I’ve seen I smell a possible hit gameshow for ABC I don’t think it will be quite as big as who wants to be a millionaire but you never know. I hope they put this on tues and either sun or Fri at 8/7 if it does well.

I am looking forward to this!!
First off, the set is OFF THE HOOK!
Secondly, I love a game show that is part knowledge with an injection of cerebral warfare. I guarantee you there WILL be upsets so it’s so hard to call a winner off the bat.
Thirdly, In the event this gameshow totally blows, It’s only a week-long commitment. So it’s all good.
Finally, Mike “Greeney” Greenberg……never heard of him. (I’m Canadian)but it looks like it fits him well.
BTW….CTV picked it up. So Woo-hoo!

Hey, that sounds good to me! I’d love to be on Duel. I’m curious why you would leave out Victor Lee. He played a pretty strong game against Ken Jennings.

The only thing I confused about (and I’m sure this will be cleared up on day 1) is how do you get a tournament with 24 players, becuase eventually that’ll leave you with an odd number, so I’m thinking there will a wild card or wildcards at some point.
If the tournament works the way I think it will having 4 wildcards in round 2 and my math is right this means the potential jackpot is $2,665,000 assuming each winner goes down to 1 chip and their opponent uses up all of theirs. again, If I’ve got the format down right the least the jackpot could be is $1,350,000 assuming when a player misses a question all of their unused chips go into the pot and the winner doesn’t lose a single chip each time. since that’s unlikely I’d say the odds are pretty good the jackpot will be close to $2,000,000.
just from the 2-question clip I see a lot of memorable catch phrases which is good for recogntiion sake: “screen up”, “screen down”, “(name) you have been pressed you have 7 seconds” and the pressure music is the most intense thing I’ve ever heard, it’s tense enough seeing the contestant scramble to place their chips during this time but wow!
I’m really looking forward to this. Thank god, my exam week is just about done so I can actually sit down and watch this.

The Syndicated is a no, Deal has been strong for several years (like Millionaire before it going Syndie) so thats a strike there…
On the fact of them having 24 players, it cause I think they’ll use a leaderboard system based on win/loss and/or money banked by player (remember those chips are $5,000 per chip, and I think I read somewhere chips not used by winner at end of game they get to have themselves)

I’m not really enthusiastic after viewing the preview. (Nor am I enthused by a potential gameplay spoiler in another clip based on the contents of the preview clip)
For a game that claims to be all about psychology, they seem to spend more time showing us poker chips being put down than the actual contestant reaction. I don’t really care if the set turns all red and there’s countdown clocks all over the screen, if I can’t see the other contestant’s panic. A nice four-box shot of their faces and their playing surfaces would go a long way.

Personally, I like what I see. Greeny seems to be handling this spectacularly, and the fact that there’s an OPTIONAL time limit. One possibility I find interesting is if a person, while pressed, hits their OWN Pressure Button. How would they handle that?

Complete speculation here, but it makes sense:
Players will be seeded 1-12 based on how many chips they had remaining upon winning their first heat. They play down to 6, reseeding based on the total number of chips they had remaining in both matches, then play down to 3. When they get to the final three, the two players with the fewest chips remaining from their three previous matches will have to Duel to get a berth in the finals; the player who conserved the most chips then plays the winner of that Duel.

Butler: I wouldn’t call Brooke Burns “classy” but that’s different topic for another day.
The online agem is up ont he site now, I jsut played a couple of games and it’s defintiely an interesting feel, my best so far is 2,550, I’m sure one of one can beat that.

Thank you Ed for the reply and for your question. BTW, I really enjoyed your match against Lesek (hope I spelled his name right) on Grand Slam. That was one of several matches I couldn’t wait to see. I only felt that Victor’s area of expertise was in pop culture (BTW, I’m from Canada and we don’t get VH1 so no Canadians got to see the World Series of Pop Culture). He did do great in the first round, but from what I saw, the later rounds proved to be his weak points. But I do agree with you that he did go against Ken. Maybe he could be a good contestant. But then again, I think you would do really well on Duel.

That was my point, but I digress.
Duel was pretty good! Certainly a step up from ABC’s recent track record as far as game shows go. My only problem was with Mike Greenberg—he just seemed boring to me.
I don’t think it’ll be a blockbuster hit, but it should do well.

I am a little skeptical of this new show. I just hope that they don’t over do it like they did Millionaire! But I will watch and see!

Speaking of Millionaire, why don’t they bring that back to primetime! That’ll be a BIG hit! I mean the syndie version is over 1000 episodes, a primetime version should be atleast 100 (as long as they don’t over do it, again).
