ABC Airs “Wipeout” Against Super Bowl Half time Show

Interesting news for February. ABC’s hit stunt game show Wipeout is having a special preview edition of season two during the half time show of the Super Bowl on February 1st. In addition to regular hosts John Anderson, John Henson, and Jill Wagner, special guest sideline reporter Michael Irvin will take part. Contestants will be cheerleaders and couch potatoes, so this may be entertaining. Wipeout‘s full new season won’t start until this summer so this is a perfect time to see how the new season goes.

So far it looks like basically the entire obstacle course will be redone except what became the break out star of the season, the Big Balls. I don’t think anyone expects the show to beat the half time show or post show of the Super Bowl, but some people will turn over to ABC. After the Super Bowl on NBC is the incredibly overrated Office and I’ll be amazed if that does anything amazing. Wipeout was easily my favorite show of the summer. It was just a fun show to sit back and laugh with. Can’t wait to see it back.

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. I’ve been out of town.

I wasn’t very imressed with Wipe-out, mostly due to the nasuea inducing level of smarm the Johns had. If they would just laugh along and have a good time, instead of being aloof sassy jerks, it would make it more watchable for me. Still, I loved ISA Japanese Gameshow much much more.

Hey, it can’t be any worse a stunt than Miss America Fear Factor during an alternative half-time long ago.

Some quotes… from The Feed: Asked if he was concerned about the “Wipeout” special spoiling his game day telecasts, NBC co-chair Ben Silverman said, “These shows like ‘American Gladiators’ start big, then drop off. It’s not as big as ‘Fear Factor’ was back in the day. I’d be more concerned if they had some heavy female-centric thing. I think Bruce Springsteen is pretty compelling, I’m not worried about ‘Wipeout.’”

And also, the source says ABC is planned to air hour-long episode of Wipeout after the Super Bowl…

Hey! I love the office! Sure its first season was awkward, but nowadays I think its hysterical.

I’ll be glad to see Wipeout back. I just hope they have a larger library of obstacles to choose from. Last season it seemed like we were seeing the same things over and over and over again.

I’m deff gonna see Wipeout. I tried 2 get on the show but I couldn’t find an apply site. It looks really fun and this past summer my friends and I (attemped) 2 make a ground verson of the sweeper. All we got was a guy sitting in an office chair with a broom in his hand (its a start).

Wipeout is our own version of a japanese game show (without counting I Survived A Japnese Game Show). Even tho sum of the obstacles are based from the japanese show (Big Balls are based off of the Cannonball Run on Viking and The Launch Pads are kinda like the Jump Hang from SASUKE aka Ninja Warrior and the Killer Surf is like the Super Jump also from SASUKE) the American version add more of a comic humor to falling into the water, as in front flips into bellyflops and jumps into faceplants and the infamous “Jacob Mann”. Deff a fun show if you never seen the japanese game shows.

I don’t know why Ben Silverman is talking because he’s network is not doing so hot and he’s not doing nothing about it.

If the Fear Factor half-time special can pull in 11.2 viewers then I don’t see why Wipeout can’t do the same thing. Well, I like Wipeout from the few episodes I saw and will be watching again…

Most halftime shows do quite well against the respective competition. However, I truly think that this particular show will do better than most. I mean, seriously, this show has the potential to be HUGE!

  • Lex says:

I just don’t see this show as being anything but America’s Funniest Home Videos, but more expensive to make. I doesn’t seem like it’ll do well against a Springsteen, then again I’m not entirely sure Springsteen and Wipeout are really the same demo.

It doesn’t surprise me that little Benny is comparing Wipeout with AG, but here’s a question: If I’m Ben Silverman (and thank god that I’m not because he’s not too popular right now), wouldn’t it be better to air American Gladiators after the Super Bowl? I’m not saying that The Office wouldn’t pull in post Super Bowl ratings, but, airing a show that would counter a similar show on the competition would make sense.

As for Wipeout airing after the Super Bowl, had ABC kept Monday Night Football, this would be the perfect Super Bowl companion (because ABC would’ve aired the Super Bowl) considering the fact that Wipeout scored huge ratings during its Summer run.

I think it’s pretty obvious that ABC’s target demographic is the stereotypical alpha-male football fans who don’t give a damn about the halftime show.

I don’t know how easily that audience will flip NBC-ABC-NBC, but I guess they reckoned on FOX and CBS fighting over the female audience.

WIPE OUT was a display of just how tasteless our society has become.
At the end of the episode, they overplayed a joke about havine “Big Balls”.
Nothing is wholesome anymore. It was simply disgusting. Is that all the writers could come up with? I was ashamed. Even the commercials advertising WIPE OUT kept trying to mention “balls” with a childish double meaning the way jr. highschool boys would do.
It really is a testament to #1. How poor our comedy writers have become.
and #2,-How far we as a society has sunken in decency & morality.
Of course the producers knew the likes of the show would attract many young children, yet they chose to continually focus on testicals?
Well I for one found it despicable and gives the entire show 2 THUMBS DOWN.
