A Look at Some of the New “Price is Right”
Yesterday we posted about a press release sent out by CBS regarding The Price is Right, discussing new games, updated set pieces, and elevated excitement. A video was recently posted about on the show’s official website showing off the new games and look. Take a look below. It looks like the new excitement is basically just some new lights and huge money, so there we go. Plinko and Ten Chances looks pretty cool, and the new game Pay the Rent looks to be exciting.

None of that looks that bad at all. Honestly, looks amazing. There are some iffy things about “The Price is Right” often, but I still like Mike Richards and these changes are rockin’. Ten Chances (I guess we’ll have to start using the numerical 10 for the title) does look a little awkward and I miss the red, but it still looks good too! Someone there must LOVE blue and gold or yellow…both Most Expensive and 10 Chances are that way. lol.
I think its absolutely awesome. Yes, I’m gonna miss the original Ten Chances setup, it reminded me of a backyard and the Green Monster from Fenway for some reason. This new one and Plinko look incredible. Pay the Rent…… from what I saw so far, how is that gonna give away $100,000? With only 6 podiums with the money amounts like $0.35 and $4.99, you gotta match up store goods with those or what? We’ll know come September 20th. Can’t wait till then.
It’s hard to discern any sort of gameplay from these pics, but if I had to hazard a guess (very hazardous at this point, really) I would say it appears to be a mash-up of It’s In the Bag and Pocket ¢hange. Perhaps the game will involve having a set amount of money and having to “buy” GPs so that you have enough left over to “pay the rent” and thus win the big money; if so, that would incorporate something from the extremely short-lived Telephone Game of 1978 as well.
We’ll know on the 20th, one way or another…
Mike Richards didn’t mention this in the video, but I had heard that Plinko was also getting a bit of a gameplay upgrade as well. Something about a new “final chip” that could potentially multiply your winnings. Sounded interesting if true…
I’d be down with this; it sounds similar to how Plinko was played on the latter-day UK versions of Price, where you could gamble your winnings on a chance to win a car (or other major prize) with one final chip and the money slots covered over with alternating “WIN” and “LOSE” spaces.
If it were up to me, I’d adopt this format, but instead of a car, go for the winnings-multiplier like so:
DOUBLE-NOTHING-DOUBLE-NOTHING-TRIPLE-NOTHING-DOUBLE-NOTHING-DOUBLE
…and if I did this, I’d alter the main-board layout thusly:
$250-$500-$1,000-$100-$10,000-$100-$1,000-$500-$250
…so that every chip in the main game was gauranteed to pay off at least a little money. Then even someone who bobbled all his/her SPs could have something to gamble with.
It would be nice to raise the side amounts on Plinko from 100-500-1000 up to 500-1000-2000.
Yeah. When I saw the 0′s still there, I was disappointed!
He was talking about the three amounts on the ends, not the 0′s. (Getting rid of the 0′s, in my opinion, would be an awful decision…)
I know what he was talking about. I was just saying they should make amount changes. I don’t think so. Replacing the 0′s with $100′s would be a smart move I think. Winning $200 is really not super awesome, so it’s good enough to replace the $0′s. After that, change the others as MountainHawk suggested. Beauty!
While I agree that getting rid of the 0s (or at least upping the value of the outliers) would be a good idea, I think I understand why they’re there — or rather, one particularly compelling argument for keeping them there. Since you get one chip for free just for making it on the stage, there exists the possibility of your being able to win at least some nontrivial amount of money no matter how badly you tank at the SPs, if you didn’t have 0s on the board. That might not set well with the show’s producers, so they have to include a “shark factor” to keep things interesting.
Of course, this line of reasoning falls apart when you consider there are already games on the show where you’re guaranteed to win something no matter how badly you play; Money Game and Any Number come readily to mind, for example (though of course, the “guaranteed” money in Any Number’s Piggy Bank is so low as to be virtually nonexistent). In fact, if you were to replace the 0s with $100s, the worst-case scenario would be the player guaranteed to win at least $100 no matter what, which is actually considerably less than what most Money Game losers would leave the stage with! So it’s perhaps not so convincing an argument after all, at least if you look at the situation logically.
I agree there MountainHawk (Hi there RTVR Buddy, fancy seeing you here). They should raise those values.
Correct me if I’m wrong here but shouldn’t the $10k be $20k? Cause IIRC that was changed before Bob left the show. So why the reduction back to $10k.
The $20K was for the nighttime specials. The daytime version was still $10K.
FYI, the original Plinko had only $5000 as the big money space.
I just saw Rat Race today and I loved it. It’s a very exciting game, well put together.
The cosmetic changes….no problem with them at all. I, especially someone who LOVES the color blue, love Ten Chances. All I need is a little more black and I’m sold….. Btw, I still can’t get over the fact that Mike Richards went from Beauty and the Geek to EP-in’ TPIR. Gives me hope.
Completely agree! When I went to “The Price is Right”, I may very well have ruined my chances because the last thing I said before my interview portion was up was “I just wanna say I LOVE you and everything you’ve done.” I want to be him! lol.
Ten Chances and Plinko look all shiny and new! *nods*
I’m not going to say anything about Pay the Rent for now. At least not until after the premiere airs.
1. Can’t wait to see more of “Pay The Rent”
2. Love What they Did to “Ten (10) Chances”, now the game no longer looks like an eyesore.
3. Plinko’s Redesign I’m on the fence about (Especially the lit up “Plinko” sign on the top of the board, seems a bit garish.) But I guess it’s better to be seen in practice. That and I notice 3 lights just sitting there next to the board, what is the purpose of those?
Other than that, The Price is Fine.
Let me be the first to say, I don’t like 10 Chances’ new look. I may grow to like it in the future, but I liked the Green Monster! Plinko hasn’t been changed *too* much, the font for the amounts was changed, and I’d like to see what font they’re using for Plinko’s plasma screen. One more thing: did they steal the $100,000 sign dropping in from BigJon’s game? Watch the video, then play the Tower of Ca$h pricing game, and tell me if I’m wrong.
I have heard rumors that they took the $1MIL sign from the nighttime specials and changed the setup to read $100,000. Bigjon’s Tower of Cash game has a similar setup but I do believe the font is slightly different . Ultimately if someone wins big on that game, the money is always going to look the same. A sent check from CBS with a huge chunk of taxes taken out :P
All of these changes are great! I can’t see why anybody would not like it.
Well then maybe you should take a glance over at GR.net.
Actually most of them over there are embracing the changes. However, the usual “I can’t stand change” posters were quick to dismiss the changes as ugly and not needed. I really think ,deep down, they have no problem with the changes but don’t want to admit it.
I have loads of problems with the changes. I wish Mike Richards would look at at least one or two of the episodes from before he took over to see how the show is SUPPOSED to be run and how it survived for 36 years.
I do not love the changes deep down. I hate almost every change they’ve made since sacking Mr. Dobkovitz.
It is narrow-minded statements like this which make the hardcore Price fans a constant source of ridicule around here. Some of these games haven’t changed in more than 25 years, so basically what they did was slap on a fresh coat of paint, add a few lights, and maybe a plasma display or two. No real gameplay changes. They just want to keep things fresh, is all.
But yet you Price fans think the world will come to an end when something inane like prize background music is changed. I question the sanity of people who think about stuff like that. Perhaps they need to realize that there is more to life than this game show. Optimism is a good thing; learn to embrace it. If you’re so unhappy with these relatively minor changes, no one is forcing you to watch the show.
You Price fans, or “LFaTs” as you call yourselves, need to realize that things isometimes change. Yes, I know about the phrase “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, but honestly, I think these updates were due. I welcome these changes, and I think they look very nice. Pay The Rent looks like an interesting game, and that $100,000 sign is very retro-looking. I can’t wait to see it played. The 10 Chances board looks futuristic and cool, and I like the updates to the Plinko board as well.
So to all you Price fans, calm the heck down, and learn to accept changes. That is all.
For the most part, the cosmetic changes look pretty cool. Pay The Rent has a neat, cartoonish Disney look to it, and the $100,000 sign is just awesome. Reminds me of the disco ball they originally used for Pinko.
Speaking of Plinko: Oh. Man. The backlights look awesome, the game set looks slick and shiny… I cannot wait to see this in action.
Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for Ten Chances. The red & green latticework looked absolutely fine as it was, it wasn’t tacky or distracting at all, and it gave the game some character. Now it’s a… hulking, blue, yellow, and green thing. It looks way too streamlined. Unlike Temptation or Any Number, the new set has no character at all.
Still, I’m very much looking forward to the new season. Can’t wait to see thin Drew in action!
