“Sounds like you were home-schooled and you were there by yourself.” She sure was based on her response. Even I knew the answer before Marki locked in hers.
Sad. She just demonstrated how dumb a lot of people in today’s society really are. I may not have known the exact answer, but I’m smart enough to know that there’s not even 100 feet in 2 1/2 yards.
Precisely why I don’t watch this show anymore. But I have to agree with Jeff: this was the most entertaining zero I’ve seen, purely based upon “There are 352 feet in a yard!!” Good gravy Marie.
Amy, I don’t think it takes that much to pass the test to get on THIS show.
Un. Be. Liev. A. Ble. It’s pretty sad that the contestant doesn’t know how many feet in a yard, but another major error she committed was how she sought help. Surely she could have figured out, from the kids’ body language, who had the right answer. As a Jeopardy! and Millionaire fan, shows in which knowledge is rewarded, I can tell “5th Grader” deliberately picks contestants who know little.
Is this entertainment? Whatever happened to merit as a basis for game show winnings? Deal or No Deal, …5th Grader, National Bingo Night, etc. all essentially offer money for very little effort, knowledge, or ability to think straight. As such, they turn off those of us who appreciate savvy gameplay.
Another clue she missed was in the question itself, since it was about two people, one standing on the other’s shoulders. That bit of info limits the answer to no higher than 15, and that’s assuming you have Yao Ming standing on Manute Bol’s shoulders.
I had to share this clip. My students had their moments throughout this year, but I’d venture to say every one of them knows a yard is 5289 3 feet. This contestant also claims she learned about a yard’s length in chemistry. Heaven help us all if she reproduces.
I thank both of you for those great comments. The biggest problem I have with this show now is simply this: The contestants do not deserve the money they win. If you win a million on Millionaire, 1 VS 100, or some huge money on Jeopardy, you truly deserve it. It takes being very smart, very gutsy, and a bit of luck. On this show, you’re given hundreds of thousands of dollars for knowing something you should already know by now. Eventually SOME people need to scam this show, miss a few questions on the test to apply, but show huge personality. Once they get on the show, kick their brain into high gear. All it will take is a few people pretending to be stupid to get on this show and win the million to show just how crappy this is.
I haven’t watched since the first episode, but I’m somewhat curious: has the pacing picked up since February? It moved at a snail’s pace then, and I’d hope that they at least moved things along.
I’d love to see how CBS intended to produce their summer show, before FOX stole the idea and rushed to get it on the air. Just like them to steal a concept and run with it. (sigh)
Thank you for the clip. The Mrs. and I watched the show, but turned it off after the twins finished their run (actually liked the twin contestants — they came off as regular guys, not the crazy, overcaffeinated kind you see on DoND, and they were easy to root for). During the twins’ run, the Mrs. asked me why no contestant picks the new girl (Marki) to be their partner. I showed her the above clip this morning as my answer :)
Is the CBS project officially dead? I have a feeling that CBS may be holding this show in reserve in case a writer’s strike occurs later this year.
Jeopardy is the only game show left on TV where you actually have to be smart to be on it. That’s really sad, but at least we have GSN to watch the game shows from the times where people had to at least know that there are 3 feet in a yard to get on it…
I agree the society is dumbing down I asked this question to my classmates in college and they all got it wrong!
In fact now that I think about it I always ask them questions from this show and I don’t recall a question that anybody got right from the second grade or higher..Maybe that’s why I on pace for valedvictorian.
“You are not smarter than a fifth grader, goodbye!” I too find it upsetting that pop culture has become common knowledge and knowing math and science makes one an egghead, as if you would be more acceptable for not being intelligent.
I’m looking forward to seeing how many ultra-simple questions get asked and missed on our version… I’m severely tempted to audition for it if I can find how, actually.
I heard that Canada will have their own version of 5th Grader soon with tapings in Toronto this October. I got No Deal from Del Or No Deal, but let’s hope 5th Grader will put in the driver’s seat.

I couldn’t believe this lady even passed the test to get on. I at least know that there are 3 feet in a yard.
This has got to be one of the dumbest game shows ever.

This re-affirms my suspicions that in order to pass the test, you are not allowed to get too many of the questions right.

All I can say is oh….my….god.
Even on Card Sharks you had to have a shred of knowledge with how people think to be an effective contestant.
We live in a nation that applauds the dumbing down of our society. It’s a shame we’ve come to this.
