3D “Wheel of Fortune”? OK Then.

Not a lot of news this week so far, sadly, but this one was a bit too funny to pass up.  I can’t explain the reasoning or rationale behind this, but apparently Wheel of Fortune could possibly move to 3D.  Seriously.  Sony screened a clip of Wheel using new 3D technology Friday at an open house for their new 3D Technology Center on the Sony lot, according to Hollywood Reporter.

“One of the biggest challenges is keeping a game show fresh — by changing the show without changing the game,” Harry Friedman, the executive producer, said. “We do that with enhanced production value, such as set design. We typically do dimensionalized sets, which are made for 3D.”

Harry doesn’t exactly know when it’ll come, but I’d guess it will at some point.  It really makes little sense though, doesn’t it?  I can’t see any real benefit to watching Wheel in 3D.  It’s not like a movie where stuff can pop out at you.  This show just has a spinning wheel and a ton of video monitors on a board.  It’s nothing action oriented.  I said the same thing about game shows in HD, though, and now I moan when stuff isn’t in HD.

Though I do have to say watching a game show like this with special glasses to make the 1.5 million colors on the set pop out at you sounds a bit unappealing.  You never know, though.  It’s a shame it’s too late for Deal or No Deal to go 3D.

But what if they don't spend all of their winnings? =(

Wheel3D will likely make use of the new 3D TVs on the horizon that don't require glasses. (some crazy voodoo with 2 layers of LCD screens that flicker like the newer LCD 3D glasses do).

I'd also wager it'll look essentially the same on your old 2D 25" Sony Trinitron.

It's official. This show has run out of new ideas. What's next, contestants using their winnings to purchase prizes displayed on a motorized turntable? Maybe even throw a dog statue up there for cuteness…

    uh oh.
I just hope Wheel is not planning to make a "Cyberset" and maybe just make the graphics and maybe the wheel wedges go 3D because this could get Ridiculous.

God, Harry Friedman is an epic fail.

He took, what was once a simple game show and turned it into an all out freakshow.

Thank goodness he can't get his claws deep into Jeopardy. Unless he plans on adding a "Spoiler" card ala Crosswords to take money from a competitor.

Hmmm…good idea. Maybe put that on a gift certificate. But I don't know if the show would be able to find a sponsor!!!

I don't have an HDTV, so it really doesn't matter to me.

It's America's favorite game show, so it has to have all-American twists like UTTERLY POINTLESS FLASHY GIMMICKS!!

On a more serious note, hopefully this means they might actually create a set that has a gap of less than three-quarters of a mile between stage and audience. And hopefully we'll get The Cube 3D someday. Now that's a game show made for 3D if ever there was one.

This season is shaping up to be the most unexciting one ever. This season not once has a single contestant won $100,000 much less lost it and we've seen a few players land on the million wedge avoiding hitting bankrupt the rest of the game then winning the game. Then in the bonus round they solve the puzzle but don't get the million however I've seen a few players miss the bonus puzzle with the million on the line but luckily it wasn't the million.

  • Only the contestants will be Cyber next year. You don't want to rush too many changes at once!

Even Jeopardy! would be better suited for 3D than Wheel. At least it has that part with the clues seemingly popping out of the board and into the camera…

  • Chris says:

Well, since Sony owns WoF, they figured it best to use it to test their 3d technology on it…

  • Ryan_Z says:

Eh. I guess it would look kinda cool if most of the population even had something to view it with.

Normally I don't like being negative let alone hear or seeing it, but I'm putting my best face forward when I say the show will do fine without going in to 3D. It already has everything it needs, so there's no need for more.

My thoughts exactly. In fact, I pulled this little statement from a TVSquad article:

"While there are now 3D television sets being sold, I'm still not sold on the technology"

The point being, why should I bother getting something for 3D when my own eyes are just fine for WoF. Our whole lives revolve in 3D(or more to the point,4D if you count time). If I wanna see something in 3D, all I have to do is just use my eyes..
