3D “Wheel of Fortune”? OK Then.

Not a lot of news this week so far, sadly, but this one was a bit too funny to pass up.  I can’t explain the reasoning or rationale behind this, but apparently Wheel of Fortune could possibly move to 3D.  Seriously.  Sony screened a clip of Wheel using new 3D technology Friday at an open house for their new 3D Technology Center on the Sony lot, according to Hollywood Reporter.

“One of the biggest challenges is keeping a game show fresh — by changing the show without changing the game,” Harry Friedman, the executive producer, said. “We do that with enhanced production value, such as set design. We typically do dimensionalized sets, which are made for 3D.”

Harry doesn’t exactly know when it’ll come, but I’d guess it will at some point.  It really makes little sense though, doesn’t it?  I can’t see any real benefit to watching Wheel in 3D.  It’s not like a movie where stuff can pop out at you.  This show just has a spinning wheel and a ton of video monitors on a board.  It’s nothing action oriented.  I said the same thing about game shows in HD, though, and now I moan when stuff isn’t in HD.

Though I do have to say watching a game show like this with special glasses to make the 1.5 million colors on the set pop out at you sounds a bit unappealing.  You never know, though.  It’s a shame it’s too late for Deal or No Deal to go 3D.

Sounds like the "reason" for doing this is because they can. I stopped watching Wheel in the mid-'90s because it just got too gimmicky. I started watching again only about 5 years ago.

Harry Friedman = Mr. change JUST for the sake of change

The reason he makes these changes is because he can. Sony wants him to. Why? In an interview on Youtube he talks about how for many years Wheel could only be described as a mega hit and Sony felt like the show needed to be taken in a new direction.

I feel that it has gone in the wrong direction. The show is just too gimkicky, rushed, dull and boring nowdays. The only good "tweak" that he made to the show was the electronic puzzleboard but even that got f'd up since they took the boarder off of it. If Sony and Friedman want to do something different how about they ditch the "Happy Wheels" theme and videoscreen and bring back the theme written by Merv Griffin, "Changing Keys", and the multicolored backdrops. I'd rather see that than this 3D foolishness. And please don't give them any ideas to f'up Jeopardy! the new theme with the pointless additions and the removal of the JEOPARDY! letters is bad enough.

Wow. This constant bashing of Wheel of Fortune and Harry Friedman looks awfully familiar. Where have I seen this before?

Oh yeah! I remember! Golden Road.net was EXACTLY like this back in July 2008!

Seriously. You people haven't even seen the change, and you're ALREADY bashing the show!?! Where are your priorities!?!
