“Family Feud” Heads to Primetime NBC

Is this the year of Family Feud or what?  Let’s look at all the things in its favor.

*It’s the only syndicated show to actually gain viewers from year to year.
*GSN picked up the rerun rights to the current John O’Hurley edition of the show.
*ION picked up the rerun rights as well.

And now, NBC has picked up the primetime rights to air some celebrity editions of the show.  According to Variety, both Fremantle and CBS are preparing the show for as soon as summer but keeping details about it very tight under wraps.  The good news is that the game has an established format and can’t be screwed up that terribly much!

This is a huge opportunity for Feud here.  It’s evident that the general public likes John O’Hurley a lot or else the ratings wouldn’t continually go up.  Honestly, if they can advertise and raise more awareness of the syndicated version with all of this, it won’t be hard to actually pass Who Wants to be a Millionaire? in the ratings.  It’s just nice seeing the show get the attention it finally deserves.

ION Television ALSO Picks Up O’Hurley’s “Family Feud”

Does the title seem familiar to you? Yeah it does to me as well. On Monday, we announced GSN’s acquisition of John O’Hurley’s first two seasons of Family Feud. Well it was announced on Tuesday that ION Television, a network that used to be known as PAX has also picked up the show. It begins on April 7th which is actually a month before it premieres on GSN. The show will air at 7pm & 7:30pm. That’s right, two airings. Check your local listings for times in your area though.

ION Television (PAX) back in the day used to air shows such as Supermarket Sweep and Shop Til’ You Drop every night until they changed formats and have recently become your TV Land of channels airing such classics as Mama’s Family, Baywatch, Who’s The Boss?, and the awesome Drew Carey Show. Yeah, Family Feud really doesn’t fit into ION’s schedule really well, but hey, I’m not complaining.

“Bingo America” Videos and More

We’re going on a Bingo America frenzy for the next few days.  We were recently provided with some video clips (which are also on YouTube) as well as videos and a Facebook group all about GSN’s new original interactive show debuting Monday, March 31st, at 7:00PM ET.  We’ll be putting up a new video and photos each day for the next few days until the debut, so be on the lookout.  Click here to become a fan of the show on Facebook as well.

GSN Picks Up John O’Hurley “Family Feud”

This just in: GSN has picked up the rights to the incredible John O’Hurley run of Family Feud.  The newest seasons of the Feud featuring a FAR superior host compared to Richard Karn will start airing May 5th, Tuesdays through Saturdays, at 9:30PM ET, replacing the dreadful Karn edition.

Hopefully this can get more awareness for the current version of the Feud out there.  It’s been better than it has been in ages and, again, he’s exponentially better than Richard Karn.  There are very few people who have disagreed to that.  O’Hurley Feud has also recently been renewed for yet another season, the third under the new edition bringing the classic and modern feel of the show together.  Fantastic modern pickup.

One more GSN scheduling note: a Mother’s Day marathon of Whammy! will air from 9:00AM ET to 4:00PM ET  on Sunday, May 11th.

CBS Orders More Primetime “Price is Right”

CBS tried putting Drew Carey’s Power of 10 on Wednesdays at 8:00PM ET and it failed rather spectacularly.  Drew’s getting a second chance as four new $1,000,000 episodes of The Price is Right have been ordered to start airing April 30th at 8:00PM ET.  The show has been very consistent in winning its time slot Fridays at 8:00PM ET, albeit it has had literally no competition.  Facing Deal or No Deal and Moment of Truth is a tiny bit different than the soon-to-be-glue (and rightfully so) racehorse named Amne$ia.

This is actually going to set up a really interesting game show division.  You’ll have Deal or No Deal with its big-money-flashy game crowd.  You’ll have Moment of Truth with the slightly cynical and human emotion crowd.  And finally you’ll have The Price is Right with the older skewing safety game crowd.  I don’t think it’ll be a big surprise to see Price is Right skewing the oldest, but I’ll be really interested to see what show takes a bigger hit from this schedule change.  I’d expect to see Deal lose more, but I’ve been wrong many times before.

British “Dirty Rotten Cheater”

One of my favorite shows of this decade is Dirty Rotten Cheater, which around fifteen people saw.  I was pretty happy when I heard BBC was reviving the show, but a bit let down when I saw the final product.  It seems like quite a step down from what we saw on PAX.  I can stand a smaller budget, but it just didn’t seem to click this time.  However, the game’s still pretty fun.  Check out England’s take on our cult favorite.

We’ll be away for the next few days, so have a nice holiday weekend.  I swear we’ll post news once some actually comes in.  March has been a horrendously slow month.

“Moment of Truth” Video for Today

So yeah, there’s really no news today.  Why not put a video up.  I asked around to people on my buddy list, and a vast majority said The Moment of Truth, so here you go.  This was easily the biggest moment for the show and it cemented why I liked it; the show makes you feel emotion.  You can either root for a contestant or cheer on someone losing a ton of money, like contestant Laura Cleri.  If nothing else, the comment box is going to be fun to see your hatred towards this show.  I will note that I really despise shows like Maury and Jerry Springer and things like that, but there’s something relatively addictive about this show to me.  Probably only me around these parts, but there is.

Preview of “Bingo America”

As I recently said, I really mis-reviewed How Much is Enough? and I do apologize and hope you’ll still believe me for some of my reviews. Because of that last horrible judgement on my part, I was a tiny bit afraid of Bingo America. It had three check marks which made me afraid. One, again, my wrong opinion of How Much is Enough?. Two, it’s well documented that I truly think National Bingo Night is the worst game show in ages. Three, I really find bingo to be boring and stale to begin with. Luckily the producers of ABC’s primetime screw up retooled their show from the dreck that it was and created a fast paced fun little quiz show that is almost a full package.

The game is really really simple. $500 is put into the game’s jackpot at the start of the game. A ball is taken from the gigantic hopper that survived from ABC. At-home players mark it off their card ($50 goes to you if you get a bingo. Not bad if you ask me.). After the ball is placed on a glowing stand by co-host Crystal Wallasch, main host Patrick Duffy asks a question with no choices. A right answer adds the number of the ball into the game jackpot (in dollars obviously) and puts the letter on the ball on your board. If you miss, your opponent gets a free shot. All you have to do is spell BINGO to win a game. Two games gives you the jackpot and the right to play for $100,000. If a game takes a long time to complete, they switch to a two-choice question format after each ball is drawn to speed it up. For the bonus, there are 75 numbers. The champ picks numbers randomly off the board, and the first pair he or she matches (whether it be trips, prizes, or cash up to $100,000) is what he or she takes home in addition to the main game jackpot. At-home players have to bonus numbers on their downloaded card. If the studio player calls both of those numbers, the at-home player is a winner.

Let’s start with the set and music. Not much to say about the music, it’s stereotypical current game show music. Much better than the overly synthesized How Much is Enough? music but nothing to write home about like Lingo’s. The set is nice but again, the same as everything else today. It looks like a bruise; all black and blue. The huge hopper is there which is a nice touch. Also, it’s a GSN show with an audience! I know I gripe a lot about audiences, but you can’t fake the enthusiasm on a set with a canned audience. The graphics are also very nice too.

The hosts are good for the most part. Patrick Duffy keeps it going but has little time for any interaction or fun because of the constant throws to the at-home players. Truthfully, I got sick of it after a bit. I get the point and I think most of America gets the point of how to mark numbers off a card. A reminder in the beginning and middle of an act will suffice, not every five seconds. Co-host Crystal Wallasch is plays practically the same role the model on ABC’s version did, just taking the balls out of the chute and saying the number. They are sure to bill her on advertisements, press packs, and the website, but she does little beyond just stand there and shuts up. At least give her something to do. Talk to her for a few seconds, just something. Her job could have easily been done by Patrick the way they are doing it now.

The front game is actually pretty enjoyable. I think it’s worth noting that this is GSN’s first straight quiz show in a long long time. No word game here, it’s all quiz. The money is not bad at all. I’d expect to see game jackpots in the area of $1,250 to $2,000. It’s more than any other main game on GSN gives away to a person. The trivia questions are things you should know but often don’t which is nice as well. It’s a challenge, but not so much that it becomes frustrating like Camouflage. They move through it briskly as well so there’s little boredom.

One big step up from the ABC version is the fact that you don’t have to play the actual bingo game to participate. You can answer the questions and play along as well as marking off the cards if you choose. One small thing bugs me about the main game presentation, though. Every time they draw a ball they have to cue the dramatic lighting and music. At the start of the round is fine, but every 25 seconds for each ball, again, gets old very quickly.

Where the show drops the ball big time is in the end game. They go from a fast paced quiz show with a bingo aspect to complete luck of the draw “Pick numbers and you win what you match.” Not only that, it’s incredibly slow and lacks the tension it should have. It seems to me that they got really lazy in developing the show and just threw together anything they could. You’re telling me they couldn’t have made some bingo related end game instead of randomly picking numbers? In the game I watched, we got through three picks in four minutes. One thing I’d like to see is the layout of the board. I know there aren’t going to be tens of thousands of dollars floating around everywhere, but I’m sincerely hoping they don’t have a gap from like $10,000 to $100,000. I’d rather just have a lower top prize but more generous cash values. Regardless, the end game needs some serious tweaking to at least fit the theme of the show. It’s the only time I truly felt bored during the show.

All in all, it’s a nice little GSN quiz show. Nice money, nice presentation, nice game play, nice host. The truly disappointing thing is the end game. This review would be a bit more glowing if they had some substance there, but they took the easy way out which is rarely every a good way to go. However, there are a lot of positives to relatively make up for it. It’s nice to have a fast paced straight quiz show on the network again. Quick, fun, and fast: a perfect edition to GSN’s lineup.

A perfect addition would be a new season of Lingo to complement it, but oh well.

A Few GSN Updates

We have a few GSN updates that I figured would be best to just place all in one post instead of a few spanning far too much of the page.

*First off, we will have a full preview of Bingo America later tonight.   It’s better than How Much is Enough?, I swear.

*Second, Wink Martindale is coming back to GSN Live (which you should really check out if you haven’t, it’s a lot of fun), but not as a guest.  No, this time he will actually be hosting the show as regular host Fred Roggin takes the week of March 24th off.  Friday’s guest will be host of The Hollywood Squares Peter Marshall as well.  This is Wink’s first hosting job in quite some time, isn’t it?

*Next, I would really like to apologize, I completely misjudged How Much is Enough?.  The first episode I saw I thought it was fine and not too shabby.  As I continued to watch it leveled off into me not caring about the show.  So I really did a crappy review for that one when it first came out, and I am sorry.  However, many of you will be happy to know that the show is disappearing completely on March 31st.  A late breaking scheduling update says that it’s being replaced by Family Feud (Karn) on weekends at 3:30PM ET, Lingo on Saturday nights, and Karn Feud on Sunday nights.

I really think How Much is Enough? could have been better if they tried to include a tiny bit more game into the show.  However, it just never got fully to where it should be.  Plus seeing people constantly chickening out gets very old very quickly.

Ken Jennings Visits “GSN Live”

Here’s a nice little surprise for the GSN Live viewers.  Ken Jennings, the Jeopardy! and Grand Slam 2007 champion, is dropping by the set on March 19th.  During his time, hosts Fred Roggin and Heidi Bohay will catch up with Ken and discuss his new book Ken Jennings Trivia Almanac - 8888 Questions in 365 Days.  Not only that, Ken will be giving hints and tips to GSN Live viewers on how to be a winning contestant.  Check all of this out on Wednesday, March 19th, from noon to 3:00PM on GSN.
