TOP 07 OF 07: Number One

I don’t think it’ll be a huge surprise as to what is number one: Drew Carey’s debut as host of The Price is Right. I’m not saying the earth shook when Bob Barker retired (mainly because I’m not really a fan of his), but it was still big. There was a pretty big division in the game show world, which was either between sane, skeptical fans and sane, accepting fans; or sane fans and insane Bob Barker people. A vast majority of people were very happy with Drew Carey’s performance, and I can honestly say I have not cared about The Price is Right until he came in. He made the show a lot more fun than it has been in ages.

A tiny note: we could not do this without mentioning the monumental passing of game show icon Merv Griffin.  Every person working in game shows was influenced by some him, and there is no other out there today as good as he is.

Reminder: Final Day of Nick GAS

As previously reported Nickelodeon GAS is ceasing production after 6am tomorrow (12/31) morning. This is your final chance to watch and DVR shows like GUTS, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Figure it Out, Get the Picture, Double Dare 2000, and Nick Arcade. While they say it’s going Broadband, for some reason I don’t think Viacom cares enough to actually go through with it. While the channel may be crap now, the shows are still golden and this is your last shot to see them.

TOP 07 OF 07: Number Two

This was by far my favorite game of 2007, producing a good number of the best moments of the year.  It’s the Grand Slam finale. Everyone knew the match-up between Ogi Ogas and Ken Jennings was going to be epic. I was never planning on it being this epic, though. The show was one of the greatest game show events I’ve seen and I’m really hoping GSN’s smart enough to renew it for a new season. But even if they don’t here’s the full game, because just one part doesn’t do this amazing game show justice. The rest are under the break.

TOP 07 OF 07: Number Three

Number three on our countdown is from one of my personal favorite new shows: CBS’s Power of 10. It’s not often you get a major winner on a primetime game show. However, on the first game on the first episode of the Drew Carey hosted show, first contestant Jamie Sadler won the second biggest prize; $1,000,000; in an extremely exciting finish. He decided not to go for the top prize of $10,000,000 which proved to be wise. Fantastic casting for a fantastic show made for a fantastic win.  Only Michael Davies and Embassy Row on mass can take such a tiny idea and make it a fun game.  Take a look.

Ratings Updated

We’re back!  For a few minutes!  We got a ratings update for syndicated shows and figured you’d all like to know.  It was up-up-up for all the decent shows.  Every show was up, but most noticeable was Who Wants to be a Millionaire? increasing to a 3.2, a season high.  Crosswords also went up to a 0.9, and Feud is teetering on the edge of a 2.0.  Check out the ratings page for full information.

TOP 07 OF 07: Number Four

Number four is the second moment of sadness coming from my favorite show of the new primetime game show era: 1 VS 100. This clip features contestant Raul Torres risked a massive $263,000 with fifteen mob members left. Eliminating the rest gave him $1,000,000. This moment is one of the most memorable ever for me because of the question. The audience laughed when they heard the question, but loud groans followed by complete quiet came after the choices. The Mob had a nice payday after he missed the question and lost the money to five Mob members, but you could definitely feel the sadness of the main player of the game, Raul. Here’s the clip.

TOP 07 OF 07: Number Five

Next on our countdown is one of two moments of sadness. This one is actually about a show: the revival of Temptation. To say that was an anticipated show among the game show community is a major understatement. To say that there was a severe level of sadness and confusion after a few weeks of its debut is another understatement. Even I am left wondering how they could screw the show so much. Many problems came from just how brutally feminine the show is. It’s staggering how it is; it’s like they forgot men existed when creating it. Whether or not is sees another season is up in the air (I’d guess no at this point), but here’s a clip of the new revival of Temptation.

TOP 07 OF 07: Number Six

Number six on our countdown is very recent. Two days ago as a matter of fact: Duel’s finale. This was memorable for me for a number of reasons. First off, obviously it was a lot of money so it was big for that reason. Second off, it really was a mix of everything I saw decent and bad in the format. I did enjoy the trivia portion. And I suppose, after thinking and talking to others, there is some strategy involved, and a bit of use of bluffing. However, the execution was just wrong for me. I realized that I did not care about the contestants, especially the ones in the finals, by the end. The only one I knew was the belly dancer. Greenberg wasn’t really allowed to be all he could be, and I just felt the tournament was poorly set up. I’d be glad to see it return if they can fix some issues. However, the ratings are saying it probably won’t. This was unbelievably better than National Bingo Night, but I was still, personally, pretty let down counting who was behind this. Here’s a clip of the finale; one of the few times, if not the first, a $1M+ jackpot was given to someone who didn’t know an answer.

TOP 07 OF 07: Number Seven

For the remainder of the year, we’ll be counting down the most memorable game show moments of 2007 that our staff decided on.  There’s only one sad stipulation.  It had to be regulated to things we had video clips for, which was most of it, but there were a few we couldn’t do.  We’d place the Who Wants to be a Millionaire? $500,000 win really high, but we couldn’t get the rights to it, sorry!

At number seven is an international one: the first ever £250,000 UK Deal or No Deal win.  It’s not involving our country directly, but it was sure a big one.  Laura Pearce had a tough decision to make with a low value left, £250,000 (the top prize); and a middle-of-the-road offer.  I’m usually excessively evil with the offers I like, but I even felt that they were begging for a £250,000 win with this one.  But regardless, it was a pretty big moment, and very exciting.  Take a look at my seventh most memorable moment of 2007.

Game Show Segment featured on ESPN

Former 2-Minute Drill host Kenny Mayne is back at it in the game show world. Well, he at least covered a segment for ESPN on game shows. It features Wink Martindale, Pat Sajak, Howie Mandel, Claudia Jordan, and Ken Jennings. They discuss Randy Moss’ attempt in getting a new game show on the air. This is a comedy segment where pretty much every guest in this short two and a half minute segment are acting out of character. It’s really funny, just give it a watch.
