Mike Greenberg Announced as Host of ABC’s “Duel”
USA Today's life section blog has announced that Mike Greenberg of ESPN has been named the host of ABC's new quiz show Duel. Greenberg is the co-host of Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio and ESPN2. Duel sees twenty contestants face each other in a competition of trivia and strategy for a cash jackpot that could be over $1.5 million.

We have been doing things with them for a few months now, and they are all fantastic, as is the program. It's definitely worth checking out on their website. There are moments on this site where I question if I should even tell you about some news or if I should let you be happy and unaware. There's no huge news yet today, so I get to torture you! There are many things NBC could do to make Deal or No Deal worse in the upcoming months, like offering a few ponies, Howie Mandel as a model in a dress, or just giving away a million dollars with no real work. Wait, that last one is happening, again! Reader Bill R. sent me a video of the Ellen DeGeneres show where she subbed as a Deal or No Deal suitcase model; number four to be exact. This episode s

A huge fear I always have with marathons where viewers choose what they want to see. More often than not bloc voting occurs and it doesn't really show what people like the most, it's just a few fans voting way too much. It's why I was afraid of the Viewer's Choice marathon on GSN. However, with no real bloc voting that I could see, this year's lineup and official standings are really interesting: all classics. Not a sight of a GSN original or modern show anywhere. And the top show, $100,000 Pyramid, definitely interests me as it's not on the lineup anymore. I've never been a fan of Tic Tac Dough, Bullseye, or The Joker's Wild, though (numbers 4, 3 and 2). I've always thought they were a bit too brain-dead with all the same bonus round. Of course by today's standards those shows are for geniuses, but still, I just don't like them. Regardless, the schedule is really interesting and shows what people want to see. Click the break to see the entire lineup. (more...)

One of the best things GSN's new CEO David Goldhill has done is advertise the entire day's schedule, not just an episode of High Stakes Poker a couple thousand times a day. With how low the ratings have been as of late, it's not a bad idea to advertise the morning classics and late night programming. The writer's strike has really hurt the late night industry, but luckily GSN's late night lineup of new and classic shows obviously can't be hurt by it. In hoping to cash in on this, they have created some very interesting ads. Take a look and tell me/them what you think. Late night is so much nicer without Playmania, isn't it? Remember the days when G4 used to be tolerable? I'm not a big video game player, but they had incredibly entertaining shows like G4TV.com. Now it's all crap plus the awesome Arrested Development. Well this doesn't really help the fact that the channel is total crap, but they are casting for a pilot for a new game show. They need people who know trivia, pop culture, and physical challenges. Your guess is as good as mine. If you live in LA and want $100 to play a game, click here.

If anyone can make an interactive quiz show respectable and interesting, it's definitely Michael Davies. The Who Wants to be a Millionaire? executive producer and head of Embassy Row is developing an interactive quiz show called The Empire which will allow players to be "projected" into the studio by an internet profile or a live video. "I've been waiting for someone to crack the multiplatform game show for a decade, and this is far beyond what I could have imagined," Davies said. "It is young, visual, dynamic and frankly, revolutionary." Davies is looking to pitch this to networks in December. I have more faith in him than anyone else to make an interactive game show. While fun, shows like Playmania are always just lacking a certain style and sophistication to make it a respectable game show.

Before even taping episodes, ABC has announced the debut date of their new trivia/bluffing/strategy game Duel. The show will be seen as a week long event, much like ABC originally did Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, from December 17th through the 23rd at 8PM ET. There is no word of a host yet. If you want to get a brief idea of some game play, just imagine trivia mixed in with the tense betting of poker. Sources are telling us it's a very interesting and fantastic game as done in run-throughs, but it might be difficult to get the internal thinking of players, much like in poker. Also, one of our personal favorite hosts, Mark Walberg, and his new vehicle The Moment of Truth will be seen on January 23rd at 9PM ET. We are still waiting on an air date for everything else, though. The only shows that have completely taped by this point are Do You Trust Me? for CBS, Wanna Bet? for ABC, and 1 VS 100 for NBC which is shocking to find still missing from the schedule after the failure of shows like Phenomenon. Unless something freakish happens I wouldn't expect to see the eight remaining episodes of the popular quizzer until sometime in 2008.

Paging Robert McKee: Million Dollar Password is finally ready to start casting contestants. The new edition of the show, hosted by Regis Philbin and based out of New York City for CBS, will supposedly combine some of the best of all editions of Password, plus some new twists, to make it a new hit for a new generation. Of course this is Fremantle, the company that absolutely massacred Temptation, so I'm crossing my fingers on this one. If you're good at Password and can get to Los Angeles, there's no reason not to get involved in this, especially for $1,000,000. People 18-59 can apply, and be ready to send off a picture of yourself. Apparently no ugly people need apply. Click here to sign up for Password. Also, one of our favorite shows in quite some time, Power of 10, is starting to cast again and will be taping fairly soon. If you have your finger on the pulse of America and have the guts, you may be leaving Astoria, NY, with $10,000,000. The Drew Carey hosted game show will be returning soon. Click here to apply. And that's it for casting. If you find any new major shows looking for contestants suddenly, be sure to tell us.

A while ago GSN was casting for their new original show How Much is Enough?. They have their contestants, who have been applying online or in person for the last two months. They also have their host: Corbin Bernsen. This might be one of GSN's more high profile hosts in quite some time; probably since Chuck Woolery. He's been on the hit TV show L.A. Law, the major movie Major League, and currently can be seen on USA's Psych. Plus he was on my personal favorite reality show which is The Mole. Corbin was on both celebrity seasons of it. He's become very involved in the game show industry recently; specifically GSN. Corbin had appearances on I've Got A Secret as well as produced a pilot called Carry Your Weight back in January of this year. Good news about the format! It's not a word game! It may have no trivia or real skill, but a non-word game puts a smile on my face. Quite simply, through different rounds, a giant electronic money clock will count up from $0 or a predetermined dollar value. Four players have to secretly lock in when they want the clock to stop and take whatever money is present. There is some strategy and psychology going on here, as you have to convince your oppone

As much hell as I give Dancing With the Stars (and believe me it deserves to be given hell), it does seem like a decent place for D-list celebrities to go and revive their career. With Hulk Hogan as the lead host of NBC's American Gladiators, it was announced that Laila Ali will be by his side as co-host. She stated in a line that clearly sounds she was told to say it, “It’s an honor to be reintroducing this American classic to a new generation of fans.” No word on the air date for the revival of American Gladiators, though we'd expect it to be on before 1 VS 100 which is still in limbo as shows like Phenomenon fail miserably.

Seems like Fremantle and the crew at The Price is Right are making another change for the better. According to executive producer Syd Vinnege, if you were a contestant on the show in the past you are allowed to come on again. However, there is just one restriction: you may not have played within the past ten years, which seems fair. It'll make for some interesting conversations between contestants and Drew at least, hopefully. They keep making changes to The Price is Right and I have yet to find a single bad one, or even a slightly negative one. With Drew in charge, the show seems fresh, new, and exciting. It's actually making me care about the show now too, as it's just fun to watch now. Drew's absolutely fantastic, the set is nice, the music is great, and allowing some older contestants on what truly is a new edition of The Price is Right seems like a smart move to me.

FOX's new game show, The Moment of Truth, is quickly being put to air thanks to the WGA strike. Not long after taping, the Mark Walberg hosted lie-detector game will debut on January 23rd, a Wednesday, at 9PM ET. This means it follows American Idol also meaning that save for some catastrophic and ungodly event we'll be seeing a full season. It moves to 8PM ET started March 12th. On The Moment of Truth, contestants have to essentially just answer private questions about themselves truthfully to win money. The further they go, however, the more embarrassing they get along with the more money they are worth. If they can answer all the questions the contestant wins $500,000. However, one wrong answer means they lose everything. No lifelines yet either. If the UK version is anything to go by, be expecting some great questions like "Are you an easy lay?" or "Do you own a dildo?". Why can Mark Walberg never get an actual decent show? He's such a great host and with the exception of, at most, two shows he's been left with crap. I'd also note that we're the only country not to use the title Nothing But the Truth. Probably to shed that whole Columbian murder plot thing, right?
