This might be just me (many stuff is), but I’ve found myself caring less and less about 1 VS 100 this season and basically because of all the changes they have made. The thing is that they aren’t necessarily horribly bad changes. It’s just a good deal of slightly crappy changes which have brought the show down.
The whole money chain thing definitely had gotten people to play on for a longer period of time, that’s for sure. I’m starting to think too much, though. The first few times someone got far into the game, near the $250,000 level, it was exciting. However it’s becoming a bit disappointing when you don’t win at least $250,000 now. Especially when you have a $250,000 and a $500,000 winner in a show, it’s telling me something’s a bit off. This season showed me how much better the rules from the end of season one are. Look at other countries and tweaks they’ve done to got people to play on, like Australia. What they did hurt the show immensely because it’s making a big win seem like nothing.
I initially thought the gameplay changes were to lower the money a bit. Admittedly, the money was a bit too much in early stages. However, it’s becoming painfully obvious that the new format is giving away far much more than the older format was. Sure, the money’s less in the early stages. The money is becoming far greater than ever before near the end of the game and it’s starting to devalue the idea of a big win. It takes something special to make a show like Deal or No Deal seem cheap, but a $250,000 win is becoming nothing.
The other huge gripe I have is the writing. The first season’s writing was incredibly fun and, most importantly, different than anything on television right now. The two-sided questions created some memorable player/audience reactions and made things more tricky. The straight forward questions definitely take away that special section of the show which separated it from Who Wants to be a Millionaire?. Couple that with the fact that they were begging for a millionaire on the first episode. The questions were far easier than on any other episode the show’s had thus far. Couple that with they purposely threw a quiz bowl master in there and there was basically no way he was walking away with anything less than a quarter million.
The show still has a lot of things going for it, don’t get me wrong. For the most part, the contestants are leaps and bounds better than any other show. The music and set are fantastic. Host Bob Saget is great. However, the format change really screwed them over this season and has basically made me stop caring. If they don’t get to $250,000; it looks like barely anything compared to most people on the show. The writing has made the show just average.

it’s not that you have to beat out 10 people to get $1K..
it’s that when you get to 500K, you have to wipe out the mob to get anything further, risking money that is risked once in a blue moon, on a 1/3 chance of getting it right, which the mob might get COMPLETELY RIGHT!
the easier questions for you are easier for the mob!

I still enjoy 1 vs. 100 but I agree with the writing of the questions… esp last season with the “What is the capital of the United States” (I even laughed) then the answers were “The one whos mayor is ____” (and then I said “What the F***”)… Ever since that poor guy lost all that cash, I loved the show.
They should make the higher level questions like that to make it hard on the 1 and 100, but very exciting for everyone else.

I agree. I think the old way’s better. Even though they have given away $1 million in the season premiere, it’s still a crsppy way. You have to eliminate a certain amount of the mob just to win money? Come on. My motto (and I’m sure it’s alot of other people): IF IT AIN’T BROKE, DON’T FIX IT!!!!!!!!!, and NBC certainly fix something that wasn’t broke.

No comment on the change to a “perpetual mob”? One of the things I liked about the old format was the fact that, even in the mob, you had to get every question right to continue to play, but you could keep playing (and keep winning) for as long as you continued to get questions right. As much as I enjoy seeing Oscar the Grouch on a regular basis, I miss the fact that the mob seemed like “real contestants” too.

Alex, for the most part, I agree with you. Allow me to break down the way I saw this season:
First, I don’t have an issue with the change to the money ladder. It seems fine to me. As a matter of fact, there was a twist that I expected (and I think would have been nice) but didn’t see: Once you earn a money amount, you can walk away (Money or the Mob? moment.) But, if you chose to go on, you’d have to get to the next rung before you could walk again.
The sneak peek is too much of a help. When we had well-written (i.e., misleading) questions, the sneak peek was helpful, but didn’t completely give the question away. In my opinion, this was a good thing! Now it’s more or less like walking away on Millionaire or ANY OTHER SHOW.
On that same subject, the questions have been complete softballs this season. Boo - this show used to be smart.
And finally, B-W, you read my mind!!! What happened to survivors of the Mob coming back and losers leaving? I still think that, for the most part, the mob gets shafted since they can’t choose to walk away. But, keeping the smart people builds a smarter mob and means that celebrities don’t need to make a large time commitment. :) My thught has always been to make the longest surviving mob member the next main contestant (sort of a UK Deal type thing… sort of.) That way, the long-standers are rewarded.
Oscar the Grouch is the man.

I actually didn’t think I like the new change but i actually do. I still like the last format though the best. I do like the fact though that sometime when a player is one away and you think they didn’t get it they wait about 5-10 seconds to show another player knocked out. I do miss the writing of the questions though for example a sample question might be Don’t Stop if you can name this favorite rock band of Bill Clinton’s A. The one with Stevie Nicks B. The One with Lou Gramm or C. The one with Steve Perry. That is one of my biggest complaints about the seasons but other than that it’s still a fun show. I really wish that NBC would make more episodes of 1 VS 100 and stop only having 10-15 episodes a season. I like the pacing of this show though compared to Deal. I think that 1 vS 100 started slow at first but i think that is excusable when you introduce a new show. I personally would love to see 1 VS 100 on Tuesdays after the biggest loser at 9/8 central and then on friday at 8/7 central. I just want to see more episodes of 1 VS 100.

The main issue for me is the writing of the questions, which should definitely go back to the wittier, less straightforward style of “old”. I think the payout structure was changed out of good intention, but not in the right way. The payout should be per individual knocked out, but the amount for each knocked-out mob member should go up per each individual knocked out, a bit like an accelarating section of a parabolic or hyperbolic curve.

Originally when I heard about the planned changes on 1 vs. 100, I was not in favor of them. Now that I’ve seen them in action, they really aren’t all that bad to me. Sure it’s different than last season, but not enough to make me stop watching. I still enjoy watching the show.
I do agree with the writing problem. It seems like the questions are easier and the finesse and trickery from previous episodes (as someone already mentioned with the “Capital of United States/Mayor question”) is gone.

You could do worse, I guess. But, this is STILL “1 vs.100.”

Now that I’ve actually seen an episode with new changes…I say it hasn’t lost its charm per se, but the Mob is still getting the short end of the stick here. What if we, like some countries do, completely scrap the “Money or Mob?” moment, but add a “dodge” option? Then it’ll REALLY be like Bob sometimes says: “Either you will win, or THEY will win.” Although, I suppose it would be pretty dull to see a bunch of losers on the show.
And yes, what happened to the good writing? People need brain power to win a million bucks on any show (DoND, I’m talking to you), so why don’t we make ‘em work for it a bit harder anymore?
I don’t know where I sit on the whole issue of the money tree. On the one hand, we’ve seen players play on longer than they used to, but I’d still prefer the bounty per head. Alex J brings up a very good proposal though (I hope NBC reads things like this, ’cause they could probably use the info)…it’s a nice compromise between the two.

After thinking about this a bit more, here’s an approximate breakdown of how the payout structure should work, with the total amount won after knocking out x contestants (there would still be a payout for each mob member knocked out, but the “tree” below is just so I don’t spend time doing 100 individual lines of this :) ):
x= $ won
10 5000
20 12500
30 22500
40 35000
50 50000
60 67500
70 90000
80 125000
90 180000
95 225000
96 250000
97 300000
98 375000
99 500000
100 1000000

Even before NBC aired this new season, I e-mailed a complaint to both the network, and my local affilaite, WPTV. When I saw the new season, it didn’t look as bad as it thought, but either way, 1 vs. 100 is the most underrated game show on network TV. If NBC doesn’t want it, why not ABC?

@ Alex J: It appears that you’ve punched up a rehash of the current payout structure, only with a bizarre way of paying out. For the last five, having the money go up by over $100,000 a head just doesn’t sit well with me. I thought you were referring to something like this:
Mob members 1-10 knocked out: $500 per head
11-20: $1,000 per head
21-30: $2,000 per head, etc. etc. etc., until #100 bumps the bank up to $1M.
At least, that’s what I thought. Please, correct me if I’m wrong.
